Whispers of the Eyeless: Unique Cult Management Game Review

What is Whispers of the Eyeless?

Whispers of the Eyeless is a cult management game with RPG elements out now in Steam Early Access.

You are the voice of the old dead gods, Wrath Desire, and Madness. Little remains of the dead gods, and it is up to you to bring them back. Using the powers of the old god that you slowly awaken, recruit new members, build your temple, and conquer the dungeon. Can you build a deserving following, one that can consume the city, or will you be another delusional cleric?

Gameplay

The main loop for Whispers of the Eyeless is the resource management game. Players will spend their time exploring the city, recruiting new members, fixing up their place of worship, and a little bit of dungeon delving. Exploring the city allows players to recruit new members to the party. Exploration will proct special events where players have a chance of recruiting unique members with special abilities. Players are limited in how much of the city they an explore at first, but will earn access to the more prosperous parts of the city once they gain more influence.

Once members are recruited, players are responsible for keeping them happy. Creating jobs, keeping them fed, and building a nice place of worship are all important tasks for a successful cult leader. Some cultists can be sent on jobs around the city, or on dungeon delves. The dungeon is a dangerous place, but one that can be conquered with the proper party of loyal cultist.

In the dungeon, players will explore its halls with simple point and click movement, and combat is in the classic turn based style.

Players who can manage to stay on top of all these tasks, earn their money, and gain their influence properly will have no problem resurrecting the dead gods.

Review

I enjoyed Whispers of the Eyeless. The game is still in Early Access, and it is hard to give it a proper recommendation. On one hand, the game is the perfect fusion of each genre it covers, on the other, the game doesn’t feel finished. The game works and looks great. The artwork is amazing, and I am a huge fan of the dark storybook vibe the game captures. The soundtrack and voice acting are phenomenal, and do a great job at setting the mood. The story and flavor is solid, but it is a little short. Players will catch up to the content quickly, which can definitely be a problem.

I loved the game since I tried the demo, and the new content made it worth the wait. But while I may be willing for more content, and will be returning to the game at every major update, not everyone will. The biggest reason to get Whispers of the Eyeless at this stage is because you want to support a solid game. The game does enough to help it stand out against the genre, and it is heading towards a promising direction. There really isn’t enough to be worth the price tag at the moment, but there will be if you are patient.

Game Review: Frontier Hunter: Ezra’s Wheel of Fortune

I want to start by saying that I was sent this game as a review code. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I will not let this sway my opinions. This will be an honest review of the game.

Frontier Hunter: Ezra’s Wheel of Fortune is an anime-themed Metroidvania game available on PC that you should consider if you enjoy the genre. I love the art, the voice acting is amazing, and the gameplay is solid. The game is still in early access, and while the bugs don’t leave the game unplayable, they do exists. That said, the developers have been very consistent with updates, and I don’t do that they will continue their efforts to make this game perfect. This game is not in the early stages of early access, but it is something to consider before buying.

I’ve had a fantastic experience since booting up the game. I have never been able to get into the genre until I got this game. I can’t compare it to any of the classics, but I found that this was a great place to start.

You can play Frontier Hunter with a keyboard and mouse or a controller, but I believe the controller offers a better experience. Ultimately, this choice comes down to reference. 

There is a story to this game, but it feels like your typical anime story. The story isn’t bad, but it isn’t amazing either. I would say that the main draw to this game is the gameplay. It is a lot of fun but be warned that this is a bit of a grind. You will find yourself cycling through the same rooms and beating the same enemies as you farm materials and levels or are rushing toward a save point. The types of enemies do change the deeper into the game you get, and bosses and crafting breaks keep the game feeling fresh. Make sure you explore everything to ensure that you always have the most powerful builds.

Don’t let the waifu art fool you. There is a complexity to this game. The gear, abilities, and orbs you put into a character matter in this game. You will constantly have to fiddle with your builds if you want to make any meaningful progress in this game. While it may be easy to memorize enemy patterns, having the right weaknesses, abilities, and resistances is the only real way to get through this game. Trust me, this is an easy mechanic to pick up. I am usually terrible at these types of mechanics, but I was able to bash the right combination together. It is very satisfying to be able to finally easily overcome an enemy once you have figured out a build that works. It is a bit of a grind to get the right materials and blueprints, but it isn’t a terrible one.

 

This game is worth the $18 it is asking for. If you are curious about the genre or already enjoy it, this game should be on your wishlist. I loved the feeling of accomplishment I got when I was finally able to find a new checkpoint. The boss fights are fun, the music is great, and the combat is very satisfying. What more can you ask for from your Metroidvania?

If you buy this game, make sure you are always well-fed and try to break all the walls! You can buy this game now on Steam, but there are plans to bring it to the Epic Games store.

Game Review: Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2

I want to start out by saying that I got this game as a review code and while I am grateful for the opportunity, I will not let that sway my opinion. This will be an honest review of the game.

Lovecraft Untold Stories 2 is a 2D isometric dungeon crawler for pc based on Lovecraft lore. You start off choosing from three playable characters: the witch, the professor, and the detective. Each character has its own unique abilities, armor, and weapons. You control your character through randomly generated dungeons as you try to solve a mystery.

I was very excited about this game. I liked the art, I liked that the cutscenes were comic-like, and I had fun at the intro level. But once you get out of the intro mission, the game becomes frustratingly unplayable. Movement becomes clunky and slow in the cluttered rooms. I was constantly getting stuck on boxes, holes, and trees, making kiting enemies virtually impossible. To make matters worse, I was getting stuck on the invisible boundaries of boxes and trees. The witch has a cool teleport ability that could pass through enemies but would get stuck on invisible artifacts. I died so many times because my teleport was constantly being canceled by nothing. There are instances where I would teleport only to be trapped in between an inescapable grouping of trees. When the environment is more deadly than the enemies, that is bad game design.

I thought the randomly generated dungeons were cool at first, but that view quickly turned sour. I quickly learned that the room generation was quite unbalanced. Some rooms were laughably easy, with only two enemies standing in my way. Others were impossibly hard, with too many enemies and no way to escape. There was one room I couldn’t even complete because there was a wall blocking the exit. I love the randomness of life as much as any other gamer, but this experience was frustrating. 

The insanity mechanic is nonsense. If you get hit by an enemy, you slowly get stacks of insanity. If you get too many, you die. The problem is, there is no clear indication of how much insanity you have, nor is there an easy way to clear it. Because the environment made movement difficult, it was impossible to clear a level without getting stacks of insanity. You either got killed because you got stuck trying to run away, or you died because you gathered too much insanity. This poorly designed mechanic made this game harder than it should be. 

I was beyond excited about this game because it reminds me of the Arkham Horror board game. I have been desperately trying to find a group to play with, and I believed this game would be my only chance. The disappointment I collected from this game was so painful, I couldn’t muster the strength to finish this game. I forced myself to play as much as I could, but I can only be so patient. This game is broken to the point where you won’t get any meaningful enjoyment out of it. Lovecraft Untold Stories 2 isn’t worth your time as a free game, let alone the $25 it is asking for. But if you don’t believe me, you can buy it on steam.

Game Review: Way of the Hunter

I want to start by saying that I received this game as a review code. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I will not let that sway my opinion. This will be an honest review of the game. I played this game on PC, but it is also available on PS5 and Xbox. Way of the Hunter is a hunting simulator game that aims for realism. You can track animals, pick up job requests, and there is an overarching story that you unlock as you play. It is easy to get lost in this game because it is so beautifully immersive.

The graphics in this game are pretty solid, but it is a few updates from being perfect. I encountered a few visual glitches like floating rocks and trees that affected immersion, but none of them was game-breaking. Someone in my twitch chat mentioned the art was too grainy, I didn’t have a problem with it but keep that in mind. My only issue with the visuals was the grass would get too busy, and I would lose myself trying to find the kills. My playthrough is littered with countless unclaimed carcasses because I couldn’t find them in the brush. This seems like a personal problem, but it is something to keep in mind.

The game has a story, but it acts more as flavor. You can also accept jobs to make more money that requires you to hunt specific animals. Gameplay isn’t limited to quests. You have free reign to hunt whatever you like, granted you have the right equipment. Make sure you use the money you earn to purchase the appropriate tools. 

The map is huge and will involve a lot of driving and walking to unlock all of it. There is fast travel available to keep you from making the long treks twice. My favorite part of this game was the sound. It is incredibly immersive. You can hear bugs zip by your ear, the babbling brooks, the birds in the trees, and other animal calls in the wild. I now know what a mule deer sounds like, and I can track it by just its call.

Hunting is fun, but it requires a lot of patience. If you spook the animals, you will have to spend time tracking them down or waiting till they come back. There is a detective mode that helps with tracking, but a spooked animal can easily disappear in the tree line. I have zero patience and as a result, this game became a hiking simulator. This isn’t a criticism because I enjoyed my virtual hikes. I had a favorite spot I would go to just to listen to the stream and the birds while I waited for prey. It is easy to get lost in this game as you relax and enjoy it for what it is.

My one complaint about hunting is that not all of the AI is perfect. Some animals are smart, and tracking them is fun. Others will get stuck running loops or stop making them easy targets. Some animals didn’t leave blood splatter or trails, making them impossible to track. These cases were rare, but they are something I can’t overlook.

Way of the Hunter is one of the most relaxing games I have ever played. I recommend it if you like simulator games and don’t mind waiting around for hours. I am very impatient and still enjoyed every minute. One of my favorite parts of this game is the tips you get as you play that give the players practical hunting advice not just for the game but also for real life. This game goes out of its way to teach sustainable hunting practices, and I appreciate the effort.

This game isn’t for everyone, but it is worth consideration. Check it out on Steam, PS5, and Xbox.

Video Game Review: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

I want to start by saying that this game was sent to me as a review code. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let this sway my opinions. I will treat this game like I paid for it with my own money, and this will be an honest review.

Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? is a trivia game based on the game show of the same name. I played it on the Nintendo Switch, but it is also available on the Xbox, Playstation, and PC..

The game has a single-player and multiplayer mode for up to eight players. Both have the same structure, but multiplayer has no fail condition. The game is decided into six rounds of increasing difficulty and point value. Each round has two questions that are grade specific to the round. You choose a question from a random selection of school subjects. The game is over when you can answer all the questions correctly or get a question wrong. In multiplayer mode, you finish all six rounds regardless if anyone has answers incorrectly. The winner here is the person who scores the most points.

I’ll admit, I am terrible at trivia, but this game wasn’t bad. This game is designed with a younger audience in mind, but there will be questions that will stump you. The game runs smoothly, and it looks nice. There is some animation and voice acting, but I suggest you start skipping the cutscenes when as soon as the novelty wears off. Otherwise, the games drag, and you will get bored of waiting.

This is a game you get if you love trivia and want to get your kids into the genre. It is also casual enough to bring in other adults into the genre, but please keep in mind that the skill level for the questions is on the lower end. This isn’t a game you can play for hours because it does get repetitive. I never got the same questions to repeat, but there is only so much trivia my body can take. The game tries to incentivize gameplay by hiding cosmetics and subjects behind leveling. You gain points by answering questions correctly. The points you gain in both solo and multiplayer mode work towards your overall player level. Each level unlocks cosmetics for your desk and classmates and new subjects you can choose from. I don’t like that there are subjects hidden behind leveling because it is limiting to the casual experience, but I can see how this can add incentive and diversity to the game for its longevity. 

If you like trivia, this game might be too easy. There are questions where you are literally counting vowels for example. But with kids around, this is a fun little game night game that allows room for some healthy competition. I personally would wait for a sale, but it really depends on how much your family likes trivia.
