What is Formula Legends?

Formula Legends is an arcade-style Formula one racing game out now on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games, and GoG.

Formula Legends plays playful homage to 60 years of Formula 1 by bringing the action to your fingertips. Experience 16 iconic cars through 14 evolving circuits in a series of unforgettable races. Master control of your car through any weather, across any track, and around every opponent. Do you have what it takes to be a racing legend?

Gameplay

Formula Legends has players race through a campaign races based on different periods of formula one history. Players will need to win races to unlock the games different cars and tracks.

Races

Each race is themed after a period in Formula One history, with historically accurate cars to race them. Each car has its unique quirks to overcome, and the game does a good job and making each period feel different. The game does have an adjustable difficulty for players who need need the adjustment. The track is also marked by the dark tire trails to help players see the ideal path to victory. What makes the game unique is the pitstop mechanic.

Pitstop and Resources

Despite the cartoonish feel of the game, Formula Legends has a very realistic resource and pitstop mechanic to add depth to the racing. As players make their way across the track, they will use up fuel and their tires will wear out. Players will eventually need make a pitstop where there is a quickaction mini-game to complete. Completing the game correctly the first time saves time on a players run. This means that not only do players need to maneuver quickly and efficiently around the course, they will also need to know when to make their pitstop if they want to win.

Review

Formula One is a cute little racing game with a lot of heart, but one that lacks the performance to earn my recommendation. Unless you are a hardcore racing fan who wants to see more games likes this get made, I would wait for a sale.

The Artstyle

The aststyle is what drew me to the game originally. I like the low-poly, whimsical take on the genre. The cars and the people are very cute. The world is a little simple, but there is enough detail to make each track feel different and full. After sitting with the game for a bit, that whimsy lost its appeal as I slowly realized that the game isn’t ready.

Performance

The game performs poorly on my Nvidia RTX 3060, running the default settings. The cars in this game have the worst control I’ve felt in any driving game. There was an update after I got the key that was meant to fix the performance issue, but I didn’t notice a difference. Some of the issue may be a skill issue, but a lot of the issue is with the game design. Not only do these cars feel like they are driving on ice, but hitting anything will stop the car in its tracks. To make matters worse, the AI seems to be coded to ram into you constantly. This made racing, even on the easiest difficulty, frustrating.

Difficulty

I am bad at racing games so take this with a grain of salt. This game is hard, but not because of the skillful AI that rips down the track with masterful precision. No, this game is hard because everything rams into you, or the car would randomly turn off the track. Playing on easy did not fix any of these issues. As someone who only plays racing games casually, this was incredibly hard to sit through. I like to start on easy and slowly make my way through the difficulties until I am at a comfortable medium, but the game doesn’t give me the option. This game might be fun for the veterans of the genre who understand the math behind every turn, but Formula Legends’ forced difficulty is going to lose its casual players. I am not asking for the game to be easy, I am just asking for it to be playable.

Conclusion

In its current state, I can’t recomend Formula Legends, even if you’re a fan of Formula One. I like a lot of the ideas that exist within the game like the adorable art and the pitstop/resource system, but the game clearly needs more work. With a few more performance updates, maybe it will be worth your time and hard earned money. It’s not the worst racing game, but there is no real reason to buy this over Rally Arcade Classics if you enjoy arcade racers, or my personal favorite Inertial Drift if you want something a little crazier.

You can pick up Formula Legends on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games, and GoG for $19.99.

What is Rally Arcade Classics?

Rally Arcade Classics is an arcade racer out now on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation.

Hop into your favorite car and race across some beautiful trail in an authentic arcade rally car experience. This game puts its players behind the wheel of iconic cars from the era in a experience fit for veteran and newbies alike. Whether you are setting the course record, taking first place in a race, or driving through one of the other many challenges, you won’t be siting at idle. Can you master your control over the elements and be the best racer to hit the leader boards?

Review

Rally Arcade Classics is the best arcade racer you can pick up on PC. It has a fun ratro aesthetic that takes me back to the days I spent at arcades with a fun sound track to get me into the racing mood. The game runs very well. While it does feel like an arcade racer, I didn’t notice any game changing dips in performance. This is a game that fills its niche well. If you like rally cars and enjoy arcade racers, this needs to be in your library.

Personally, I felt the game was too repetitive. There is a grind as you work your way to faster cars. On one hand, this does a good job at easing players into the more complex mechanics of the more advanced races. On the other, it can get stale if you don’t love the car you’re driving or just want to go fast. I wish it let me experience other game modes without having to unlock so much, but there is also a good amount of content to work through.

This is a good arcade racer that is worth $20. If you like the aesthetic and don’t mind the grind, this should be in your library. I am pretty indifferent when it comes to racing games, but I enjoyed my time with Rally Arcade Classics.

You can pick up Rally Arcade Classics on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation for $19.99.

The adjustable difficulty and upgrades make meaningful impact on the game, and add a layer of repeatability to the title.

Review

After Wave: Downfall is a cute little casual game that I don’t mind pulling out when I need a quick distraction. The game is cute with fun a fun art style and aesthetic, and the mechanics are engaging and fun. I enjoyed the different boss mechanics, and the fun flavors of each level. The game will feel a bit repetitive as players grind out currency for different upgrades, but it doesn’t feel too bad. It certainly doesn’t take away from the game’s casual appeal. Best of all, co-op mode is a great time (if you have the friends for it).

If you’re looking for a fun casual title to pick up when you need a short break, After Wave: Downfall is a fantastic option. It is inoffensive with a cute and comforting art style and the game play is solid. It is also works great on the Steam Deck.

Is Rage of the Dragons NEO Worth Buying? Honest Review

What is Rage of the Dragons NEO?

The cult classic fighting game, Rage of the Dragons, is now on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. Grab your fight sticks and enjoy a classic arcade fighting experience with few modern features. Challenge your friends for dominance or prove yourself online on the ranked ladder all from the comfort of your home. How far will your skills take you?

Review

Rage of the Dragons Neo is a fantastic classic feeling fighting game with amazing artwork and engaging gameplay. All the characters are unique and memorable, although some wore more fun to play because of my skill and playstyle. The AI in this game is challenging. As someone who doesn’t play many fighting games, this thing was merciless. I did feel myself get better overtime, but I had my rude awakening.

Luckily there is a very helpful training mode to help players learn the different nuanced mechanics. It has many helpful features to help anyone looking to perfect their technique. It can list inputs and combos, show character hitboxes, and the AI can be customized to help players practice certain skills.

Unfortunately, those trying to prove themselves online will be disappointment. Matchmaking on PC is dead. Unless you have friends to play with, you’re not finding a match unless the game gets a much needed surge of players.

Rage of the Dragons Neo is a fantastic fighting game. It looks cool, the mechanics are solid, and it reminiscent of a bygone era. It also works on the Steam Deck which is a huge plus. Unfortunately, without a player base, there is no real reason to buy this. Sure the AI provides its challenge, but that alone is not enough to justify buying it for $20. I would wait for a sale unless you can convince a group of people to go in on it with you. Maybe the scene is better on console, but I couldn’t tell you.

You can pick up on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch for $19.99.

What is Exo Wanderers?

Exo wanderers is an arcade twin-stick shooter tank game coming to Steam Early Access.

Earth is dying. Humanity’s last hope for survival lies in what is believed to be the closest livable solar system. Several Exo Wanderers have been sent out to investigate its many planets in hopes of finding a livable one. You have landed on a beautiful lush planet, but you are not alone. Use your tank to defend your base against the many waves of aliens as you attempt to claim a new realm for humanity. Do you have what it takes to take this world in the name of humanity, or will your legacy be lost in the stars?

Gameplay

Players must use their Exo Wanderer tanks to destroy all enemies on the map without losing their base. Players will pick up random temporary and permanent upgrades throughout a run. The game offers a decent amount of weapons, armor, and power ups to build a tank that fits their play style. The game does offer couch co-op, for those with the friends to do so. The tank physics in this game is more on the arcade side, so don’t don’t come into this expecting World of Tanks.

Impressions

I definitely need to see a more completed version of the game, but I am impressed with what is available.

I need to see a more complete version of the game, but I am impressed with what is available. The story is fine. It acts as a good frame for the game, but it isn’t something to rush to play. The voice acting isn’t great, but it is serviceable for those of us who don’t like to read. The game itself looks great. I love the cartoonish art style, and the world has a good amount of flavor. I like how the levels are split into stages, and the game has a creative way to choose between them.

Gameplay is where I have some mixed feelings. I enjoyed the game. It was quirky with a casual yet engaging arcade feel, but there are a few bugs that need to be ironed out. Aiming doesn’t feel as fluid as it could be. I would hit points in the game where the game wasn’t pointing where I needed it to. Another issue with the game is that the enemy AI is dumb. In most maps I played, half the enemies were stuck in random corners or weren’t actively hunting me down.

Issues aside, the game isn’t bad and I honestly can’t wait for a more completed version. I love the casual arcade feel and how much the game lets me destroy with the tank. I also like the upgrade system and how I can customize my tank. It doesn’t work on the Steam Deck, which is a bummer, but I’ll manage.

If you enjoy tank games or twin-stick shooters and don’t mind the lack of realism, check out Exo Wanderer. I’ll be waiting for the full version. Until then, make sure you add it to your wishlist.

MULLET MADJACK is a Welcomed Chaotic Kick of Nostolgia!

I was sent a free copy of MULLET MADJACK to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, and share this with your friends. If you’re looking for a new budget headset, I got to try out the Fifine H9s and liked them. Check out my full review. Don’t forget to follow the socials!

What is MULLET MADJACK?

MULLET MADJACK  is the fastest and most chaotic FPS you’ll ever play on PC.

The year is 2090, and the world is run by the super-rich A.I. robots known as the ROBILLIONARES. 2090 is also the birth of a new kind of man. One that has become integrated with the internet and lives his life 10 seconds at a time. These new men must now kill for entertainment if they want to live. the more likes they earn, the longer their life is. You are MULLET MAD JACK, caught in this twisted game. Fight your way through hordes of enemies and live to fight another day. Do you have what it takes?

Gameplay

MULLET MADJACK is the most intense game of DOOM you’ll ever play. You start each level with a basic weapon and fight your way through the colorful cyberpunk-themed maze. You start each run with only 10 seconds of life and earn time by killing enemies. After each run, you earn random weapons or power-ups for the remainder of the run. The RNG is fair. Most of the times I died were due to lack of skill poor planning and not the choices available. If you run out of time or if your hit points drop to zero, you lose.

Runs are insane and chaotic. The world around you blurs with enemies, explosions, and color as you rush to the exit, or are desperately seeking for that next kill. Levels in this game are randomly generated. While some levels may feel familiar, there is enough variation between each run to keep things feeling fresh. Eventually, you’ll have a boss fight. These fights are creative, but that time limit keeps things intense.

While MADJACK has a story and some terrific flavor, it isn’t going to be important to keep track of. I enjoyed the flavor and lore around the city, but it is hard to keep things straight when you only have 10 seconds to live.

Impressions

This game became my obsession. MULLETT MADJACK is the high-octane, nostalgic kick you didn’t know you needed in your life. I am a huge fan of the ’90s anime aesthetics and retro pixel art style. The music, the color, flashing lights all come together to create this beautiful unintelligible chaos that you won’t be able to put down, even for a second. Let’s not forget about the phenomenal voice acting and some of the most amazing cheesy one-liners ever. This game goes all out to create its fun and flavorful world, and I appreciate all that effort.

One thing to note is that this game feels incredibly chaotic in the beginning. Everything moves quickly, there are explosions everywhere, and the timer feels too short. As you get more comfortable with the mechanics, the time becomes less of a problem. The game never lost its intensity, but the chaos started to make sense. The game is fun when it is all explosions and chaos, but it got more fun when I started to get farther in a level and I got to notice some of the unique flavor of the world around me.

MULLET MADJACK is a fantastic retro-feeling boomer shooter with amazing vibes and aesthetics. If you’re looking for a new game and don’t mind any of the chaos, go play it today!

You can pick up MULLET MADJACK on Steam for $19.99 (currently $17.99 until May 24). There is also a demo available if you don’t believe me.

Son of the Dragon King Looks Cool, but it’s Disappointing

I was sent Son of the Dragon King for free to review for my blog. while I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, and share this with your friends. Don’t forget to follow the socials!

What is Son of the Dragon King?

Son of the Dragon King is a 3D sidecroller beat ’em up coming to PC and console. Fight your way through a fantasy feudal Japan realm as you attempt to rescue it from an impending doom. You’ll craft weapons and items to help you through your journey, use the environment to gain an advantage over your enemies and leave a trail of dead bodies. Will your skills be enough to save the realms?

Gameplay

Players will enjoy a classic sidescroller feel with a modern 3D aesthetic. Son of the Dragon King has 29 distinct and dynamic levels that players fight through. The combat system is simple. Players can jump, punch, and block their way through a sea of enemies until they complete the level. There are weapons and items scattered throughout the level to help players gain an advantage, and a unique crafting mechanic that adds a bit of depth to the gameplay. The most unique feature of the game is the trinket system that gives characters a noticeable buff in combat.

Thoughts

It’s a little tricky to review this game because it isn’t out yet, and it doesn’t feel done. The game looks good with a fantastic art style, but the gameplay feels clunky and rough. The AI gets stuck on some levels and can become invulnerable if standing too close to walls or crates making it difficult to progress through the levels. When the game works properly, it’s a neat little beat-em-up with a crafting mechanic. I also appreciate that they allow for couch co-op, but I didn’t get to try it.

What ruins this game for me is that I’ve played better games in the genre. Once you get the game’s graphics and aesthetics, the gameplay feels lacking. It is a little tricky to dismiss the game because it clearly isn’t finished yet, but it is hard to recommend in its current state. If you like the genre and can look past the clunky gameplay, it might be worth adding it to your wishlist, but I recommend you try the demo first. I would need the game to perform better before I can give it my full support because the story alone isn’t enough. I might return to reevaluate the game at release, but there isn’t enough to this game to excite me enough for that.

Head over to Steam to play the demo and add Son of the Dragon King to your wishlist.

Pixel Action: Cybertrash STATYX Review

I was sent Cybertrash STATYX for free to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, and share this with your friends. Don’t forget to follow the socials!

What is Cybertrash STATYX?

Cybertrash STATYX is a retro-styled action platformer out now for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. It’s coming to PC soon.

The future is run by corporations. Technological advances have forced a synthetic evolution for humanity. People are pressured into cybernetic modifications, and those who remain unmodified quickly become scarce. Corrupt corporations use their fresh supply of cyborgs to stomp out dissidence. Those who disobey the rules of the corporations find themselves abducted, and turned into mindless drones.

Play as Janet as she fights her way through cyborg-infested streets, trying to reclaim her memories and her freedom.

Gameplay

Cybertrash STATYX is your classic arcade action platformer. Players will jump through a 2D cyberpunk city, fighting off enemies with a myriad of guns, collecting currency, and buying upgrades. If you enjoy playing the more difficult platformers, you should look into Cybertrash STATYX. While it isn’t as unforgiving as something like Super Meatboy, it offers a solid amount of challenge within its cool aesthetic.

Thoughts

Cybertrash STATYX  has a fantastic retro aesthetic. I am a huge fan of the pixel art, and it featured a decent soundtrack. I am terrible at platforming, and while I am not a huge fan of the gameplay, I can’t deny the overwhelming sense of accomplishment I felt when I finally completed a stage. I appreciate how creative the stages got, how different the enemies felt, and how impactful upgrades and new weapons felt. It is a very well-made arcade game with some solid flavor and a decent story, and unfortunately, I wasn’t good enough to enjoy it. The only issue I see people having with this game is having to slide to jump higher instead of the traditional double jump. This mechanic is extremely frustrating.

If you’re a fan of platformers, you’ll enjoy Cybertrash STATYX a lot more than I did. You can pick up for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch for $9.99, but I recommend you check out the Steam demo first.

Sega Cult Classic, Slave Zero is Back and Better Than Ever

I was sent Slave Zero X for free to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions of the game. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, and share this with your friends. Don’t forget to follow the socials!

What is Slave Zero X

Our friends at Ziggurat Interactive have brought back the 1999 classic in a modern format that fans will appreciate. Slave Zero X is a cyberpunk hack-n-slash game out now for Xbox, Playstation, and PC via Steam and GoG. The Switch version comes out sometime this year.

In the bowls of the Megacity, Shou plots his revenge against the false god that runs it. He fuses with the Prototype Biomech Embryo X who shares his sentiment. Now they must fight their way through the city to extinguish the rot that plagues it. Will they see their retribution realized?

Gameplay

Slave Zero X is a fantastic retro-style hack-n-slash side scroller made modern. The controls feel great, the combat is challenging enough to be engaging, and the boss fights are creative. This is a game that rewards players for mastering its mechanics. Being efficient in your combos, dodges, and parries not only gets you a better score, but it means you’ll die a lot less. I never mastered the mechanics, but I had a lot of fun trying.

Review

Slave Zero X is an awesome retro experience without the clunkiness and limitations of retro gaming. This game is beautiful, and I almost want to urge you to try it to appreciate its aesthetic. The game has a beautiful and brutal pixel art style, and the way the city comes to life in the game is simply breathtaking. I appreciate everything that went into making the Megacity feel so large such as its effective use of space and scale, the loud ambient sounds of a busy city, and the movement that made the city feel alive.

The character design is marvelous and builds a unique and memorable world. Its soundtrack will keep you hyped, even when you’re losing to the same boss. Most importantly, Slave Zero X has a solid story with memorable characters, a solid pacing, and fantastic voice actors.

Gameplay is where the game will earn most of its love because the game is fun, but it is challenging. If you aren’t good at your combos, you’re going to have a rough time. I’m sure it’s possible to button-mash through most of this game, but it’s a lot better if you know what you’re doing. There is a practice mode available for players who need it.

The only real issue I had with this game was its performance. I experienced a few crashes through my runs, and the game became unstable when recording. It never got to the point where I couldn’t finish the game, but you might need to mess with the settings to avoid some of the more game-breaking issues. Other than that, I enjoyed the retro ride, and hope I can get more chances to play these kinds of games in the future.

If you’re a fan of the original Slave Zero or the retro hack-n-slash era, this is a solid addition to your library. You can pick up your digital copy of Slave Zero X on Xbox, PlayStation 5, Steam, and GoG for $24.99. If you want a hard copy of the game, you can preorder copies for PlayStation, and Switch on Amazon using my affiliate links.  They also have copies of the Calamety edition for PS5 and Switch if you want the extra goodies. The physical release is May 17.
