Grand Archive Meta Watch: Santa Clara Ascent 2024

The Santa Clara Ascent brought a welcomed shift to the meta as we sort of move away from the RE: Collection dominated meta with Arisanna taking her place in the sun. Silvie continues to be a dominating presence, but its nice to see some variety. Here are the top three decks of the event, make sure to check out the official event post for the full list.

If you need to pick up Grand Archive, make sure to do it over at TCG Player using my affiliate link. I’ll be leaving links to the singles!

Grand Archive TCG Meta Watch: Ascent Chicago Top 3

Chicago Ascent just ended and unfortunately, there were no major updates to the format. The Re:collection decks showed up in full force with Tristan taking top spot. Hopefully today’s bans will create enough ripples in the format that we’ll get to see a different grouping at Ascent Singapore. The nerf to Stoneband Scale should help cull some of the Silvie decks. Either way, here are the top three performing decks in the meta right now. I’ll leave affiliate links to singles for those who need them. Check out the official event page for the full lists.

Grand Archive Meta Watch: Chicago Regionals Top 4 (06/24)

The Chicago Regional at 401 Kollectibles was this weekend, and it looks the meta is staying firm with Wind Allies Lorraine on top and Wind Tristain and Norm Tera Silvie following close behind. While it is kind of a bummer to see the same old archetypes in the format, it is important to remember that this is a young meta. I am curious to see if there will be any surprises come Ascent Chicago in August.

This time I will be featuring the top 4 decks since the top two are variations of Wind Allies Lorraine. You can check out the full event on Omnidex. I’ll also leave TCG Player affiliate links to the singles for those who need them.

The results are in and it looks like Merlin and Lorraine were the stars of this weekend’s Oceania Nationals 2024. It’s always cool to see how the meta shifts between regions. I’ve gathered the list of the top three decks, but you can see the tournament’s full results on Omnidex. I can start collecting to the top three if there is ineterest.

Top 3 Decks From Michigan Regionals and Where to get Them

The Michigan Regionals were this weekend, and we got to see a few familiar faces do their thing. Tonoris seems to be carving his place in the meta while Zander shows his consistency yet again. It is cool to see the small tweaks and shifts in the meta as we get closer to words. I wonder what we’ll end up with?

I went ahead and collected lists for the top three decks, and I’ve left my affiliate links for the singles. Check with your LGS for a local scene and product, or use the Store Locator to find one. The Grand Archive TCG Discord is a fantastic source of news, information, and friendly faces to share the hobby with.

Crumbling: The Unique VR Hack and Slash

I was sent Crumbling for free to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I will not let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, follow, and share this with your friends. If you’re looking for accessories for your VR headset, like magnetic prescription lenses or a high-quality charging cable, get it at ZyberVR. Use discount code CHURAPE for 15% off. You can also always buy me coffee

What is Crumbling

Crumbling is a cute 3rd person hack and slash action roguelike available now on the Meta Quest and Steam VR. Take control of your favorite adorable Crumbling and fight through a unique fantasy adventure. Can you collect them all?

Gameplay

Like any roguelike, players will repeat each run fighting against unique enemies and earning randomly generated powerups and new crumbles to play with. What makes Crumbling unique is its combat. Players move their crumbling around like one would an action figure. Crumblings have access to a light attack, a heavy attack, and a dodge. The game gets incredibly creative with its spatial mechanics. Players can move the crumbling anywhere within the map space.

While the game is adorable from top to bottom, the game is harder than it appears. Players have to think about attacks and positioning in a 3D stage, taking players back to a nostalgic era when we fought with our action figures.

Thoughts

The game is cute and has a surprising amount of depth. I am impressed by how they can use 3D effectively to create its unique combat system. That said, my issue with Crumbling is with the gameplay. Moving through the toy shop to set up between each run feels cumbersome, and combat is tiring. My reach felt insufficient, and it put me in awkward and uncomfortable positions during combat. I couldn’t play this game for long because of the discomfort it caused, but I might be an odd example.

This game isn’t for me, but I can appreciate the unique attempt at the genre. The combat has enough depth to be engaging, and it runs well. Dodging enemies from every direction is such an interesting concept. If you don’t mind waving around your Crumbling wildly through combat, the game isn’t bad.

Conclusion

The game is cute, and the combat is interesting, but it felt like too much work. It is a bit too complicated for a kid’s game, but the neat nostalgic gimmick might be enough to satisfy the small niche it is meant to fill. I don’t think it’s a game that will get much play after the novelty wears away, so I can’t recommend it. Try the demo first before making your decision.

You can pick up Crumbling for $19.99 on Meta Quest and Steam VR.

The Top 5 Archetypes in the Pokemon TCG Meta Since Portland

Portland Regionals brought the meta back to its roots. A lot of familiar decks made it to top 8, with the finals being a decisive mirror match between Lost Giratina. There were a couple of odd archetypes to make top 30, but I’ll just be showing top 5. I’ll leave links to the singles for those who need them.

If you enjoy these updates, make sure you leave a like, comment, follow, and share this with your friends. If you need any Pokémon product like the new Paradox Rift set, or if you still need to preorder Paldaen Fatessave a little money and get it over at TCG Player!

1. Lost Giratina

I mean, there is no surprise here. The Lost Box Engine always does great at tournaments, and Lost Giratina is no exception. The deck is a little tricky to play because you need to be efficient when sending cards into the Lost Zone, but the deck has a great draw engine, strong early-game pressure, and Giratina gives the deck its late-game pressure as well. I’ve played a version of this and love it. It’s a little tricky for beginners, but that’s why you practice. Congratulations to Jon Eng for getting first!

2. Fusion Mew

Fusion Mew was the first meta deck I’ve ever made. I loved it so much that I even made irl, even though I don’t have people to play with. This deck is so much fun to play, and pretty simple to pick up. Genesect is a solid draw engine, mew is a fun attacker, and with things like Power Tablet and Path to the Peak, you have a nice kit to shut down a lot of big threats. Mew is easy to learn, but beginners might have trouble with all the prominent dark Pokémon in the format. Mew VMax makes the deck a high-risk high-reward type deal. Either way, it’s a solid deck. Congratulations to Maddox Corcoran for getting top 3!

3. Gardevoir

Gardevoir is my favorite deck to play. You have a solid draw engine, you have great attackers, and some neat mechanics. With Shinning Arcana Gardevoir leaving the format, she might see a little less play after rotations so I’d hold off investing too much on this, unless you aren’t playing standard. Congratulations to Bodhi Robinson for making top 4.

4. Miraidon ex

I’ve been playing a lot of Miraidon on the ladder, and it is a lot of fun. This is definitely the most beginner-friendly deck in the format at the moment, but with Flaffy leaving the format, I would wait till the new meta settles. This deck is easy to learn and super quick to set up. Congratulations to Nicholas Moffitt for top 5.

5. Arceus

Last but not least we have Arceus. I haven’t played the deck, but it looks like fun. You have a nice draw engine, a few ways to accelerate energies, and some fun attacks. I’m going to have to build this one at some point. Congratulations to Makani Tran for top 6!

Realm Protector VR: A Unique take on the Tower Defense Genre

I was sent Realm Protector for free as a review code. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review. If you enjoy my reviews, please leave a like, comment, follow, and share this with your friends. You can also always buy me coffee.

Realm Protector is a creative tower defense game for the Meta Quest 2 and above. As a Realm Protector, players build towers to stop hoards of monsters from getting through the portal and wreaking havoc on humanity. Where other games in the genre let you sit back and watch, Realm Protector places players in the towers. Do you have what it takes to keep the realm safe from evil?

Realm Protector’s gimmick is that players can control the towers in a first-person mini-game after building them. While unmanned towers do auto attack, towers controlled by players do more damage. Each tower has a unique quirk for combat. The Ice Tower has a drum mini-game to cast ice spells, which might be a reference to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Arcane lets players blast away monsters with a minigun, the Flame lets players explode them with fireballs, and the Electric tower lets you shock them with chain lightning gloves. The key to this game is to plan accordingly and switch between towers efficiently.

I like that each level lets you see the monster’s stats to give players a chance to plan their tower placement. I love that selling towers doesn’t ruin you financially. There is enough strategy involved in this game to keep players engaged, but its interactive mechanics are what sets Realm Protector apart from other games in the genre. That said, the game still feels like a tower defense, and unless you enjoy the genre, it’s going to be a hard sell. You’ll enjoy it for what it is, but whether or not you play it for the long term depends on how much you enjoy the genre.

I like the game, but I enjoy the genre. I find the repetition soothing, but enjoy the change of pace the game brings to the genre. The art is on the cartoony side, but it shouldn’t matter when it runs fine. I never had issues switching between towers, changing upgrades, or doing combat. The strategy involved is a lot more intense than the art and flavor imply, but manageable even for the most casual of gamers.

Realm Protector is fine for what is, and for $7, you can’t go wrong. It’s a little short, but again, $7. You can pick up Realm Protector on the official Meta Quest store.
