Is Island of Hearts Worth Playing? An Honest Review

What is Island of Hearts?

Island of Hearts is a dating sim FMV out now on Steam. There is a demo available for you to check out. The game deals with some adult themes like alcohol use, sexual innuendos, and girls in revealing clothes. This is your content warning.

Hook

You are at what feels the lowest point in your life. You’ve lost your job and your long time girlfriend has broken up with you. In an effort to cheer you up, your friends teleport you to the Island of Hearts where you will get a renewed chance of love. Suddenly, you find yourself at a beautiful island resort surrounded by beautiful women who are also looking for love. Explore the island, get to know the girls, and try to get all of the endings. Will you find love during your stay, or are you truly destined to be alone?

Gameplay

Island of Hearts is a piece of interactive fiction. You watch scenes play out and occasionally make choices that affects the ending you get. Each choice you make raises the affection level with each girl. There are also a few minigames sprinkled throughout to change up the gameplay, but those are just cookie clicker mechanics. You are playing this game to look at pretty girls doing cute things and to collect all of the endings. The game makes it easy to collect endings by allowing players to redo choices after completing a chapter.

Review

Island of Hearts is fine for what it is. If you are looking for a good FMV, you are better off playing something like Love too Easily or The Fame Game.This game is fun, but the quality is a little too inconsistent. If the goal is to look at pretty girls and enjoy the fan service, fine, but if you’re looking for a good story, you will be disappointed.

Story

There is a story to this game, but it isn’t always good. There are some very poorly acted and produced scenes, and some very boring ones that feel like they drag on for ever. The first part of this game before getting to the island was so boring, I almost gave up on this game. Luckily, it does pick up and not just because of the fan service. There are some legitamately fun scenes where the actors and writers are having fun with the ridiculousness of the game. There are also scenes designed specifically for the fan service which are fine, but there isn’t much plot to it. The endings is where it gets hard to recommend. There are some very fun endings, but there are also some extremely disappointing ones. I collected most of them, but I’ve lost interest in perusing the rest. Once I got the ones I wanted, I saw little interest in going back to try for more.

Quality

The quality of this game is inconstant. Some scenes have good sound, decent acting (for a group of untrained influencers speaking a second language), and are well shot. Others feel out of place because the sound is bad or the acting isn’t great. Most people won’t forgive the bad acting. There are some poorly acted scenes, but there are some very fun moments that saved the experience (and no, not the fan service ones). Are there enough good scenes to make up for the bad ones? Only if you enjoy cheesy bad movies. Also, the transitions are terrible. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it is distracting.

Gameplay

You’re playing this game to look at pretty girls in bikinis and clicking around to get the ending with your favorite girl. There are mini games, but they feel pointless. I failed a couple because the directions aren’t clear and they don’t always work great. Some of the games affect the outcomes, but the impact isn’t very clear. I like that you can go back and change your choices. This makes getting multiple endings fast and easy, but the game does a poor job at letting players know how to achieve certain endings. This is only important if you want to 100 % the whole game, but there really isn’t a reason to. Some of the endings and scenes are just too boring. I do like that collecting endings is easier than Ladies Don’t Tempt my Immortality (a game that really makes you work for all of the unlocks), but I rather be playing that because its a better story.

Conclusion

I enjoyed playing this game more than I thought I would. Although the acting isn’t great and the story is all over the place, there are some fun moments that made the game worth a couple playthroughs. Unfortunately, I don’t think the game is fun enough to recomend. There were enough scenes were I would just zone out and lose interest because nothing happens. I can’t recommend this game, especially when you have games like Love Too Easily. But, if you like the cast of girls and don’t care too much about the plot, there is a good amount of fan service to enjoy. This isn’t a porn game, but there are scenes specifically designed to show off how hot these girls really are. The game isn’t terrible, there are just better examples.

One Rotten Oath: A Unique Narrative Game Review

One Rotten Oath is a unique narrative game that combines FMV visuals with retro shooter gameplay. Check out the Steam demo today.

Hook

Civilization crumbles under the influence of a mysterious chemical leak. People turn into rabid blood thirsty monsters, and survivors do their best to fight them off. You are one of the few survivors who keep watch at one of humanities last outposts. Using you limited resources, you must keep the monsters at bay. Can you survive long enough for help to arrive? Is help ever going to come? You will need to play to find out.

Gameplay

One Rotten Oath is an omage to the the old school FPS in the best possible way. There are two main game loops: limited exploration and base defense. In limited exploration, players move through a small map as they fight off waves of enemies. In base defense, players fight off waves of zombies before they can destroy the barrier. As the player progresses through the story, the game introduces new, harder enemies to fight off. The choices made during a round affects the ending. While the game is short, there are multiple endings a player can try to unlock.

Review

I’ve been reviewing long enough where there are games I play that I’ll forget. Every so often however, there comes a game that tries something weird, and those are the games that tend to stick with me. One Rotten Oath is one of those weird unique gems that comes across my table that helps me appreciate game creation as an art for story telling. This is one of those games I will have to recommend because of how good of an experience it is. This is a game that was made all the way out of the box and tells a captivation story that you need to try at least once. The game does deal with themes of substance abuse and suicide, so this is your content warning.

Aesthetic

Where do I even start? The blend of FMV and old school graphics is a fantastic choice. I love the retro feel of the world. Even though the maps are small, there is enough flavor sprinkled throughout to make it feel larger than it is. I am a huge fan of FMVs, and I appreciate the dev’s unique use of it for story telling and gameplay. The monsters being videos of actors with a filter over is a little silly, but it works. The sounds and music create the perfect horror atmosphere. I really adore the contrast between the FPS bits and the FMV cutscenes. It all comes together to tell an excellent story, and I am 100 percent here for it.

Story

It’s hard to write about the story because I don’t want to spoil anything. The reason the game works so well is because of how well it tells its story. The game is a framed narrative that explores the struggles of game creation and contrasts it against the struggles of surviving the apocalypses. The meta story is well done, and I love how creatively the dev blends the two stories. There are multiple endings, and I’m pretty sure I got the bad one. I am not mad, I will just have to try again.

Gameplay

The game looks simple, and the first level will have you think that it is. As you progress through the story, the game scales nicely. It adds mechanics, new enemies, and choices that affect the ending. This isn’t a game you can sit back and mindlessly click your way through the ending like one of those romance FMVs. The monsters will kill you, and there is a secret ending you need to try for. I appreciate that I am able to relive some of that old school FPS gameplay with a modern story and a modern flare. No notes. 10/10.

Conclusion

One Rotten Oath is one of my favorite games for its unique take on story telling and video game design. This is one of those game you need to try once just to appreciate it as the art form that it truly is. If you have a couple hours to experience a real and relatable story, and don’t mind the horror elements, One Rotten Oath should be in your library.

What is Ladies, Don’t Tempt My Immortality?

Ladies, Don’t Tempt My Immortality is a dating sim FMV out now on Steam. The game deals with some adult themes, so viewer discretion is advised.

Hook

You are a promising diciple of the Crane sect, destined for immortality. But the path to immortality won’t be easy. You are surrounded by beautiful women and enough temptation to lead you astray. Can you stay focused, master your teqnique and ascend to the heavens, or will temptation keep you on this mortal plane? You will need to play to find out.

Gameplay

The game plays like interactive fiction. Players watch through different scenes and are presented with choices that affect the ending. Take the time to learn about your favorite girl, gain her favor, and maybe even become a god along the way. The game does let players redo choices, go back to completed chapters, and skip through watched scenes. This makes collecting different endings easy. One thing to note, skipping around changes the path of the story and can potentially remove favor you’ve earned with the girls. Make sure are choosing the correct path for the ending you want and not just completing nodes.

Review

Ladies, Don’t Tempt My Immortality is a fun little story with a solid cast of actors and solid production. Now I don’t speak the language, but it seems fine to me. Now this isn’t my favorite FMV, but I had fun playing through the story. The story itself is very cheesy and isn’t going to be for everyone. If you enjoy those cheese harem animes, you’ll have fun with this game. Just note that there is no real gameplay loop aside from a few quicktime events, you are essentially just collecting girlfriends.

Disclaimer

This FMV is not going to be for everyone. There is a good amount of fan service that goes into this game. There is no nudity or explicit scenes (at least from what I was able to unlock), but the jokes and suggestive situations are not subtle. If you find sexual innuendos offensive, this is your content warning.

Gameplay

Aside from a few inconsequencial quicktime events, the gameplay loop is just sitting back and watching the different scenes. This is more of an interactive fiction game where you collect girls and try to unlock all the endings. I do like that you can go back at anytime during your journey to change your choices and affect the ending you get. This makes collecting all the endings easy, as long as you remember to stay on the correct path. I spent five hours unlocking a few of the endings before I lost interest. You’ll get your money’s worth if you find the girls attractive and appreciate the humor.

Performance

Ladies, Don’t Tempt My Immortality works well for the most part. There were scenes that would freeze, but continue to play. The subtitles and audio still plays, but the video would freeze. It was only an issue once where I failed the quicktime event, but I was able to go back and complete it without issue. This bug never made me miss any important information, but I was always able to go back to replay the few seconds lost in this way. Unfortunately, the game does not launch on the Steam Deck for those who prefer the convenience of playing on the console.

Story

The story isn’t going to be for everyone. The game is full of innuendos that are not subtle. A lot of the main plot points revolve around these jokes. While I enjoyed the story for how cheesy and silly it gets about getting the girl, not everyone else is. The meta story is about the main character trying to achieve immortality to fulfill his destiny, but a lot of that plot takes a back seat to the romance. At the end of the day, you are playing a game where you are collecting scenes with cute girls.

Conclusion

I love FMVs, and Ladies, Don’t Tempt My Immortality did little to sway my love away from the genre. I love watching cheesy bad movies, and felt the story was a lot of fun. While it may not be a ground breaking FMV or my favorite while we’re at it, I enjoyed every minute of it. I have a soft spot for cheesy harem stories, and this scratches that itch. If you enjoy the genre, the game will earn its paycheck, but if you’re looking for something more serious, you are better off looking elsewhere.

What is Don’t Stop Girlypop!?

Don’t Stop Girlypop! is a Y2K themed arena movement shooter where you can’t stop moving coming to Steam on January 29, 2026. Go check out the demo and don’t forget to add it to your wishlist.

Hook

The evil mining corporation Tirgis Nix wants to grain your world of The Love, the valuable resource that keeps the planet alive. A resistance has formed to push back the corporation’s forces, but the evil robot army proves too difficult a force. You are the only one with the power, guns, and speed to take this planet back from Tirgirs Nix. Jump, run, and slide your way through waves of enemies and you jam out to high energy girly pop and kill anything that stands in your way. Can you keep moving long enough to save the planet before all The Love is drained from the planet?

Gameplay

The key in Don’t Stop Girlypop! is to not stop moving. Player movement is slow at first, but build momentum overtime. This momentum not only increases speed players move through the world, but increases the amount of damage they output. Combat is chaotic as players jump, swing, and do everything they can to keep their momentum up while shooting down every evil robot that gets in their way.

The game is split into stages with a clock to insentient speed. Players can race for the high score, or settle for the story. Players also unlock new weapons that open up the room for a diverse amount of playstyles. All this is done against an excellent Girlypop soundtrack that will get you in the mood for killing robots. Just don’t, stop, moving!

Review

Don’t Stop Girly Pop has become one of my favorite games. I love the perfect blend of Y2K aesthetics, its fantastic soundtrack, and the high octaine gameplay that kept my heart rate at dangerous levels.

Aesthetic

Don’t Stop Girlypop! is the perfect love letter to Y2K era aesthetic and gaming. I love the contrast between the rough, retro, quake like graphics against the more girly pop themes. You can decorate your weapons to be as flashy as you want, and of course the music is the cherry that makes this game such a treat. If you’re old like me, or enjoy revisiting those classic retro era arena shooters, you will appreciate the amount of effort that was put into building this unique world. Things do get a little hectic with all the exploding colors and fast paced movement, but if you slow down long enough to enjoy the level design, you won’t be disapointed.

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack to this game is fantastic and should be one of the reasons you are playing this game. I love the music so much, I’ve added the songs to my running mix. Do yourself a favor and listen to the OST. I will link the playlist below, but first, credit where credit is due:

Story

There has been a good amount of effort put into building a world around this game. The story is strait forward, but with enough flavor to keep me invested. I liked going out of my way to pick up the different bits of the story to learn about the world. The game does have voice acting, and while a little rough in parts, I appreciate that I don’t have to read.

Gameplay

I was ready to right this game off because if felt like there was too much going on, but this was strictly a skill issue. When everything started to click, it has been very hard to put this game down. I am still bad at this game, but I am having fun trying to get better. Maps are creatively designed to keep players moving. Some of the weapons feel better than others, but I found use for all of them as I got a better understanding of the game’s mechanics. Each weapon opens up a player to a unique playstyle without taking away from the lore or flavor of the world. Best of all, they can be customized to fit the best Girlypop version of you that you can dream of.

Combat

Once I got a grasp of the mechanics, combat felt so fluid. It is important to understand the mechanics so you can make full use of the weapons, environment, and momentum mechanics. At first, combat does feel a little too chaotic, but when it clicks, I welcomed the chaos. I would describe combat in Don’t Stop Girlypop! as the most exhilarating combat you’ll experience with a soundtrack that will help keep you into gear. The game does a good job at making the mob fights feel fresh and exciting, and the boss fights are very creative and memorable. If you aren’t sweating by the end of the level, you’re doing everything wrong.

Conclusion

Don’t Stop Girlypop! is now one of my favorite games. I love the fastpaced combat, the solid worldbuilding, and the fantastic soundtrack. If you are looking for a unique shooter to add to your collection, it needs to be Don’t Stop Girlypop! This game is nonstop fun from the moment you pick up the first weapon, till the moment you clear the last stage. Go add it to your wishlist, and make sure you pick up on release on January 29, 2026.

What is The Fame Game: Welcome to Hollywood

The Fame Game is a dating sim FMV out now on Steam.

You find yourself in a leading role in a hit show. While you do your best to rise into your stardom, you find yourself the center of attention. Seven beautiful woman will compete for your attention, but only one can take the role. You will flirt, go on dates, and get to know each girl as you try as you jump start your acting career. Who will you choose? How far will you go?

Gameplay

The game is essentially a choose your own adventure game made into a movie. Players watch the story unfold and make the choices that will shape the overall story. There are multiple endings, and the game makes it easy to play for them all. The game lets players skip scenes they’ve already seen, and even rewind to a previous choice if they mess up a choice.

The game has two goals:

  1. Become a great actor
  2. Get the girl

Players must earn a certain amount of acting points by the end of the story for the great actor ending. The game offers players scenes with choices that affect how well they do in the series. The choices made during these segments determine if Jonathan’s trip to Hollywood leaves him a star, or sends him back to Ohio.

The main loop of the game is getting the girl. Each girl has a unique personality and affection meter. Players are given the opportunity to get to know each girl, and try to romance them. If players are able to fill the affection meter, they end up with the girl. The choices they make during the story affects the girls and endings they have access to by the end.

Review

The people behind The Fame Game: Welcome to Hollywood did a fantastic job at creating what is easily one of my favorite FMVs. While the game and story is incredibly cheesy, I can’t deny that I loved every minute of it.

The story is fine, but very cheesy. All the girls have an unexplainable affection for Jonathan and will chase him down, even when it feels forced. It reminds me of the cheesy harem anime’s of my youth, with almost as much fan service. If you like cheesy drama’s, this has that vibe.

The girls are each unique and memorable, but there are clearly some that are better actors. Some actors will bring their characters to life in very fun and memorable scenes, while others will leave with awkward yet passable performances. The acting doesn’t take away from the enjoyment, and honestly gives the game its charm.

The one thing to look out for is the fan service. While none it felt inappropriate, I wouldn’t play this in public for fear of being judged. Other than that, the game is a solid FMV. The story is fun, the characters are memorable, and the production is solid. If you like cheesy dramas and FMVs, this is a game you should at least play once. It is short enough to play in a sitting, and the game makes it easy to explore different narratives.

American Hero is back, but this time it’s sexier, dirtier, and unfiltered. Check out the lost FMV coming to GOG on July 4th!

Our friends over at Ziggurat Interactive are releasing the unrated version of American Hero, and it promises to be raunchier and campier than ever. American Hero is an unreleased action FMV game from the 90s originally made for the Atari Jaguar. Although it was officially remastered for modern consoles (Xbox, PS4, Switch, and PC) in 2021, it is going to feel like an old game. American Hero is a bad campy ’90s action movie where players have control of the narrative. It isn’t going to be for everyone. I love bad campy action movies, so my only issue with this game is going to be the price. A price hasn’t been announced yet, but I am willing to pay around $8 for this game.

Gamers play as Jack, a retired intelligence agent for the U.S. who pulled out of retirement for one more mission. The evil scientist Krueger wants to unleash a deadly virus into the Los Angeles water supply, and only Jack can stop him. Will you make the right choices that will help Jack save the world, or will you become another of Krueger’s victims?  

American Hero: Unrated Edition promises the same action-packed story but with more profanity, violence, and sex appeal. This game is going to be fun, but only for certain people. American Hero is an incredible niche game, limited only to those who enjoy this era of campiness and don’t mind the FMV format. Although the game has been remastered, it will lack the polish of modern games. American Hero is from an era that was still experimenting with the format, and they didn’t get everything right. I love that Ziggurat Interactive is remastering a game like this because it was from an era of gaming that I missed out on. I like that there has been a push to bring back older games to a modern audience. Although this may not be the best example, I want there to be other projects like this where publishers bring lesser-known titles to the modern age, even if it is just for nostalgia. It’s okay if you skip this, but I thought I’d share it in case there are people who need to see this announcement.

Game Review: Mia and the Dragon Princess

I was sent Mia and the Dragon Princess as a review code. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I will be honest with my review.

Mia and the Dragon Princess is an interactive action movie you can play on Android, IOS, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic games.

Mia feels trapped in a boring job and wishes for some excitement. Her wish comes true when a mysterious woman ends up in her alley. Before Mia can find help for this mysterious woman, a group of thugs barge in and threaten her friends. What will Mia do?

Occasionally while watching this movie, viewers will be given choices that will affect the outcome. The movie has ten endings and different storylines. The timer for each choice gives this movie its urgency, and some choices will be tricky to make. By the end of your first playthrough, you are going to want to play for a different ending. You skip scenes you’ve already watched to make the experience less tedious, but they are available if you need a refresher. 

Mia and the Dragon Princess is a solid action movie.The story is a bit cheesy in parts, but it is a lot of fun. The acting is fine, the action is well-choreographed, and the stories are well done. I do have to warn you that the stories do get dark. There is death and violence in this movie, but nothing too gruesome. I loved all the small jokes sprinkled throughout, but I have a soft spot for cheesy movies. I want to keep this review a bit vague because I don’t want to spoil the story. I suggest you go as blind as possible for your first playthrough. 

I was surprised by this title because I didn’t know what to expect. I loved it, and see myself returning to the title a few more playthroughs. It was a unique experience with a solid and fun story that I recommend to everyone. That said, it is a bit of a niche title. If you are someone who enjoys b movies or cheesy ones, this is a fun title. Otherwise, I would wait for a discount. I wouldn’t call this a game because of how easily you can earn all the endings, but it is also a bit more complicated than a movie. Mia and the Dragon Princess is a cool concept with an impressive execution, and I recommend you try it at least once with friends.

Excellence in Narrative: Immorality

This year’s winner for the IGF’s Excellence in Narrative award went to Immorality, a fantastically done mystery about the cinema. Immorality is a beautiful mystery as you get to jump between scenes filmed with real actors. It is a very creative way to tell a story and one with many choices to make. I have always missed this genre of gaming, but I was fortunate to try this for a few minutes. My experience left me wanting more because everything was well done. I love the grainy feel of the footage you sift through, the acting is fantastic, and the concept is so good. I will be trying to get myself a copy of this for review, but till then, you should at least Wishlist this.
