Tombstone MMO: A Cozy Western Adventure

What is Tombstone MMO?

Thombstone MMO is a low-res 2D western themed MMO out now on Steam.

Travel to the 8-bit post-apocalyptic world of Tombstone, where you will need to gather, craft, and quest for survival. This barren world has lots to explore as players find their play style through its many cozy gameplay loops. With over 20 skills to train, players will find themselves busy mastering them all. So grab your favorite weapon and set off on an unforgettable adventure.

Review

I was drawn to this game by its unique and adorable style. The lofi aesthetic gives the game an undeniable cozy vibe, without losing any of the detail. There was a lot of effort put into the world building, and I appreciate every ounce of it. I love the quirky tone of the dialogue, appreciate the fantastic sound track, and love the flavor of the different regions. If you are a fan of westerns, this captures the spirit of the genre perfectly.

The community, at least the people I interacted with, were all friendly and helpful. There definitely needs to be more players, but those I encountered were nice. I would still recommend picking this up with a couple of friends, but there is nothing wrong with playing solo. I played solo and had enough fun to keep on playing even after this review.

As far as gameplay goes, it does start off a little slow. The grind feels a little steep in the beginning, and it doesn’t help that there isn’t much direction. I like that there aren’t arrows or paths moving me between quests and checkpoints because it forced me to explore the world on my own and read everything. It is a very cool world to experience. Once I started picking up on the different nuances and venturing further into the world, it became a very cozy and relaxing experience. It can be a bit repetitive, but these games tend to be. I never felt like it was my job to login every day, but instead enjoyed the journey.

The game is Free to Play, but one that you need to try at least once. This is a cozy game that is relaxing, but with enough asks and goals to keep players invested without the stress that comes with the traditional MMO. I am sure there are stressful moments to Tombstone, but not to the extent as a lot of the more grindier 3D entries to the genre.

Do you need to buy the paid DLC to enjoy the game? No. I never felt the need to use anything that came with the package. I honestly forgot about it till now. If you play the game and and enjoy it, it is a fantastic way to support the developer, and worth well worth the price tag.

If you’re looking for a new MMO, try out Tombstone MMO. It is a cute and cozy change of pace that is worth checking out at least once. Once you decide that you will be playing the game enough to justify the cost of the Save 10% on TombstoneMMO – Farmer’s Bundle on Steam, go pick it up on Steam.

Don’t Lose Aggro: An Engaging Survival Action Rogue-like Demo Review

What is Don’t Lose Aggro?

Don’t Lose Aggro is a unique twist on the survival action rogue-like coming to Steam.

Ever wanted the feeling of tanking in your favorite MMO but without any of the pressure? Well pick up your shield and your favorite ally and do just that in Don’t Lose Aggro. Fend off against waves of enemies and their bosses as you use your skills to keep allies alive. Do you have what it takes to beat the raid and unlock everything? Then check out the Don’t Lose Aggro today!

Gameplay

Players chose their shield and ally and load into a run where they defend against waves of enemies using their kit. All players start with the same shield, move pool, and ally, unlocking more as they play and beat challenges. During a run, players can auto attack in the beginning, but slowly learn new spells and abilities as they kill enemies to level. In typical rogue-like fashion, the spells are offered randomly at each level up, but the pool players choose from grows the more they play. Check out the trailer below for some gameplay footage.

Review

While the game does need a bit more substance and optimization, the game is fun and will find its niche. I like that I don’t have to learn dungeon mechanics or routs to jump into the fray. I especially love the lack of pressure to do well. The game does feel too hard at the beginning, and that kind of makes the grind feel worse. I get the idea is that the game will get easier the more you play, but getting through the first fight feels like it takes too long. This could be a skill issue.

The does feel a little bare, especially in the beginning. The maps are empty, except for enemies, and there aren’t enough choices. As a result, the game starts to feel very repetitive until you start unlocking new permanents that shake up the gameplay. That said, I don’t think this is a game you are meant to no-life, and picking it up here and there for few hours of fun has its value.

I had my fun with the demo and can’t wait for the full release. It has cool flavor, some interesting mechanics, and I love that I can play it on the Steam deck. Drakantos Closed Beta is Live: First Day Impressions

Intro

The wait is finally over. After years of waiting and following this game, I finally got my hands on beta. The Drakantos closed beta will run from July 25 – 27th and it is looking like a very successful run. With over 150k applications for entry, this game is getting a proper test. Make sure you apply over on the official Steam page if you haven’t done so, and don’t forget to wishlist. It looks like they are still rolling out keys in waves. Make sure you also join the official Discord, you might get lucky with a giveaway.

What is Drakantos?

Drakantos is a free-to-play pixel-art MMORPG coming to Steam and mobile devices. Players can choose from a collection of 20 diverse heroes as they explore the world of Eldras. Players can enjoy the worlds facinating story, fight players in a competative PvP Arena, or help each other out on PvE content. There are plans for raids, world bosses, and everything you’ve come to love from a PvP, but accessible to everyone. One thing to note is that all characters will not be playable at first. Characters will need to be unlocked through play or a battle pass, but I hope that none of it is locked behind a pay wall. I was assured that the cash shop would only be cosmetic last I spoke to the devs, but we will have to wait and see. I’ve been covering this game in great detail for a while now, make sure you check out my other articles on the subject.

Impressions

I have beta test a few of the newer MMO’s in recent years, and none have gotten me as excited as Drakantos. I know I’ve only played the game a day, but I am prepared to spend my Saturday playing this game. I love how alive the game feels in the hubs and in missions, which gives me hope for its success. I love the art. The game does a good job of creating fantasy through its pixel-art, and it has been a lot of fun exploring the world. Some of the maps do feel a little busy, but its nothing that will get me to quit. Playing this game on the Steam Deck gives me the nostolgic feeling of the gameboy days I spent playing JRPGs, and I am here for it. The fact that I can play this game properly on the Steam Deck during a beta is also a huge plus. Everything feels snappy and optimized, and I am preferring the handheld experience.

The combat uses a simple cooldown system. Instead of mana, players will need to wait on cooldowns. While the game looks simple, there are some nuances in rotation, and some skills you need to aim or hold. Make sure you read your spells

The grind so far has been pretty fun. Players have story content to play through that slowly introduces different mechanics. There are also a few side quests to fill space and unlock more content like gathering. Mostly, players can queue up for random jobs that scale based on a player’s power level. These jobs rotate on a timer and randomly pairs players into teams of threes (unless you have friends). There are different types of quests that scale with your power level, and give loot. They make it beneficial to explore the whole map and kill everything with hidden chests and additional rewards. You get more loot the more enemies you kill. There is no PvP yet, which is fine for the beta.

Now it is only the first day, so I need a bit more time for a fuller picture. I will be doing a more detailed version of my impressions when the beta is over. Drakantos Close Beta Signups are now Live!

it is finally happening! After a long anticipated wait, we finally get a date for the Drakantos closed beta! The closed beta will run from July 25th – July 27th, and signups are live! Make sure you join the official Discord and add the game to your watchlist! If you don’t know what Drakantos is, make sure you check out my initial post.

This will be a short post because not much is known aside from the dates. We will get news about the playable characters at a later date, and I will be sure to cover it then as well. For now, all we know is that you will be able to invite your friends to the beta if you get in (provided the Steam function properly works properly that weekend).

I have been following Drakantos since I got a chance to talk to a few of the devs during my time at GDC a couple years back. Every Dev log, and I recommend you check them all out both the official coverage and my own, has added to my excitement and made me impatient. I am really rooting for this game’s success because I love the art, the flavor, and the passion that is going into the project. I can’t wait for finally get my hands on this game! Until then, we wait for more news.

Introduction

It has been a while since I’ve posted about Drakantos, but after reading the latest dev log, I had to post something. I’ll be summarizing the bits of the log that were most interesting to me, so make sure you check out the official post for all the details. Make sure you add Drakantos to your wishlist!

Yuki Gameplay Teaser

I was planning on playing support when this game finally releases, but all of the teased DPS rolls look like a lot of fun. Yuki is no exception and if you’re looking for a high mobility champion and don’t mind listening the voice, Yuki is going to be a beast.

The Delay

The game has been delayed, but for good reason. The original morphing into something different because the devs seem to be listening to the community. Make sure you join the official Discord to join the conversation. Lets cover a few of the changes that I am most excited about.

Customization

The original plan for customization were the skins players can get from the cash shop or the battle pass. I know the idea of monetization is going to raise some flags, but the devs need to get paid. We can only hope it isn’t predatory. Customization will still be limited the set skins, but players are allowed a few small tweeks to create a unique look. Players will be able to change the dye of items and characters, and even change hairstyles and armor pieces. How much a character can be customized is yet to be seen, but it is a nice feature for those who enjoy the fashion side of MMOs.

Open World

Drakantos was originally supposed to be a dungeon crawler MMO, one with a central hub and dungeons and content for players to queue for. The devs have decided to expand their world and allow players to explore what the new world has to offer. I assume there will be limitations because it is still a mobile game, but I am all for running around the world, questing, and finding treasure.

Artifacts and Trophies

The system I am most excited for is the artifact system. Artifacts are items players collect throughout their journey that give characters unique active abilities. This gives players a way to customize their character and shake up the combat. I am sure there will be a meta for this after a while, but it will be interesting to see what they come up. I’ll be gunning for the wackiest build I can find.

The artifact system has the potential of being a very cool system. Ideally, assuming the balance is there, players will have to switch between artifacts depending on the activity. I just hope the grind isn’t bad for unlocking multiple artifacts. This is a great way to shake up a season between character releases, and a quick way to shake up the meta when necessary. We’ll have to see what they do with it, but I am hopeful.

Mini Bosses

I love the art for this game, and these mini bosses are no exception. This game has a ton of flavor and I can’t wait to explore all of it.

Pets and Mounts

The more art I see for pets and mounts, the more excited I become for the system. There are a few I wouldn’t mind chasing, especially the mimic pet! I know this won’t be for everyone, but it is cool to see some variety.

Is League of Angels: Pact Worth Playing?

What is League of Angels: Pact

League of Angels: Pact is an action-idle MMORPG out now on PC and mobile.

Call powerful angles to fight along side you as you fight your way through endless swarms of monsters and demons. Build your character with powerful loot, upgrade your abilities, and become the hero this world needs. Do you have what it takes? Will fortune favor your many rolls? Its free, so it doesn’t hurt to find out.

Gameplay

The game is an idle game with options to actively cast abilities. Players will let their character make their way through the adventure, farming xp, completing quests, and earning currency and loot for upgrades. This game is a more casual take on the old-school Diablo style of gaming, with a lot more collectibles and a steeper grind, even if it is a more passive one. Ultimately, the player is trying to farm resources to upgrade armor, abilities, and to summon more powerful angels. It is very RNG reliant, with a few skill-based roadblocks to keep players engaged.

Review

While League of Angels: Pact has that old school Diablo vibe that had me curious. The art style and flavor are fantastic, the animation is solid, and the world is interesting. That interest started to dry up quickly when it turned out to not be the truest definition of an AFK game.

Early levels of this game are guided by a competent AI. Players can sit back and enjoy a simple passive grind and a lot of flashing lights. Occasionally, the game requires player input to continue progression. The problem is that it happens too often to be considered a true AFK MMO. Other games in the genre allow players to log off and continue a very passive grind without any player input. There comes a time in League of Angels where you need to actively be playing and spending money to be competitive. Calling it an action-idle MMO sort of feels like a misnomer because you’re eventually going to have to play. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it isn’t what I signed up for.

The biggest issue with this game is the gameplay. Players are either going to enjoy the semi-passive grind, or it is going to be more trouble that it is worth. I wasn’t a fan of the semi-idle gameplay. The game became too much work, and the work wasn’t fun. I loved the art and flavor, but there wasn’t enough substance for me to stick with it. If you like old school Diablo and don’t mind eventually having to spend money, its free to try. You should definitely support the game if you like it, but it wasn’t for me. My search for a new mobile game continues.

Is Cycles of Aylorea Worth the Alpha Price?

What is Cycles of Aylorea?

Cycles of Aylorea is an open world survival MMO with the goal of player driven content.

You wake up in a strange world with the clothes on your back and a desire to survive. Use the resources available to you to build your arsenal, construct your home, and survive the ever changing landscape. Team up with other players to build vibrant cities, forge alliance, and fight off anyone who gets in your way. Will Cycles of Aylorea be the sandbox playground we’ve been waiting for?

Gameplay

The alpha features the traditional Survival MMO experience where players attempt to get their foothold in Aylorea while defending against the elements and other players. The Alpha features always on PVP where players can loot the corpses of the dead. But those players who can survive this unforgiving world or make strong alliances can build bases or take up a profession. Future patches will expand the gameplay to allow players to form cities, and create contracts, and there will be a few PVE events to keep things spicy.

Review

I know Cycles of Aylorea is still in its alpha, but I fear this project may be a bit too ambitious. None of what I got to try in the alpha made me want more.

The game kept crashing on character creation whenever I changed hair color. Aside from the hairstyle, none of the other features did anything. I don’t care too much about character creation, so I am willing to overlook this issue. I then proceeded to spawn inside a mountain. I was able to get out, but it is emblematic of the rest of the experience.

I understand the animations are not ready yet, but they are wonky and offputting. I was also moving through trees and other solid objects during farming or when I was trying to run away. Again, I am willing to forgive some level of polish since the game is still in its infancy.

What is harder to forgive is the lack of novelty. Cycles of Aylorea doesn’t do enough different, at least not enough to be worth the $45 alpha key. Combat feels stiff and boring, farming and crafting feel like the same chore it does in other survival games, and there was never anyone around for PVP. Playing at the odd hours I do meant that I was playing solo, and the solo experience is boring. Maybe with a few more patches and features this game will be interesting, but it isn’t really worth playing it over any of the other survival games out there.

If you don’t mind the bugs and want to help make Cycles of Aylorea a better game, go pick it up using my reference code. I’d recommend trying it with friends so you have something to do, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. Nothing about this game excites me for a better version, but I am willing to give it another chance after a few major updates.

Drakantos Gets Closer to Release and a Solid Gameplay Teaser

This month’s Dev log was a little late, but it was juicy. While we don’t have a firm release date, we do have a time frame. Drakantos plans its release for 2025. This seems like a long time, especially for those of us following from the beginning, but I’ve made it this far, what is a couple of more months. I rather have a finished game than a rushed one. Make sure you check out the official log for all the details, and don’t forget to Wishlist!

In a bit of sad news, dev logs will be moved to a three-month schedule. This means longer waits between devlogs, but it also means we’ll be getting juicier ones. There will be a consistent stream of teasers on the official Drakantos Discord, so make sure you join up and check regularly. I’ll try to do a monthly update of the teasers of they are juicy enough.

Liam Teaser

This month’s teaser was fantastic. We not only got to see Liam gameplay, but we got to get a good look at how the world of Drakantos works. We get a peak at the player hub and how questing works. I like the clean UI and the guild hall has a fantastic vibe to it. Most importantly, we got to see group combat. I love the art and am always impressed with how good they make the attack animations. I can see it being a little too busy for some folks, but I find it the perfect amount of world-shattering chaos without it ever being too distracting. I am curious to see how it things will work with busier instances like PvP and World Bosses.

I wasn’t too impressed with Liam’s gameplay, but I don’t tank. He seems too slow for my taste, but in the right hands, he can be a menace. Liam has a solid taunt, access to valuable debuffs, AOE, and he can close gaps quickly when needed. The cherry on top is his cool animations and voice acting. If you are looking to tank in Drakantos, you definitely need to consider Liam.

Game Info

Drakantos will be an MMO with dungeon-crawler elements. It will have an open world to explore, quest, and make friends in. There will be an overarching story which I am very excited to dive into. The game already has a solid amount of lore, I can’t wait to see what they do with it. There will also be a traditional player market. As long as players aren’t allowed to sell real money items, I’m cool with a player-run economy.

Drakantos will include character-specific prologues that will eventually lead to the starting zone. This will include a character story, a great way to start the game. The devs talk about moving away from the traditional linear system of questing in the hopes of giving the system purpose. Quests will reward players with gold and experience, but it will also unlock new systems, shops, and areas for the players. Some side quests will be class-specific, requiring players to use a character that knows magic for example. Most importantly, these types of quests will offer horizontal progression, which means completing a mission counts for the entire account. I like that the game isn’t forcing a tedious grind with their unique system.

The Dungeon Crawl

We got to see a bit of the Adventurer’s Guild in the Liam teaser above. The Guild is the main player hub where players can gather and queue for instances. Instances will take players to over 120 different maps and have them complete different quests. The intention is to always have players complete a different quest every time, even if they queue up for the same map. This is a very cool feature. While I do find comfort in repetition, the grind can get soul-crushing and monotonous. I can’t wait to see how this system is implemented. There will also be a random secondary objective or rare event to make things extra spicy. This can be a random encounter or a golden gnome for example. Completing side quests will net you more rewards, but they are optional.

Matchmaking

Matchmaking for an instance is tied to a player’s power level. There is no lobby. Instead of waiting for others to join, the game jumps you to the instance as it continues to look for other players. Difficulty scales based on the number of players in an instance (max 3), and rescales if someone drops suddenly. This is fantastic for a mobile game where internet connection can be spotty. Premade groups can be up to four for when you eventually join your guild and make your friends.

Conclusion

I continue to get hyped for the Drakantos release because this game looks fantastic. I’ve been waiting for an MMO to fill the void PSO left behind, and I am hoping this will be it. I love the art, the flavor, and the fact that this thing is portable. I can play it anywhere! Each month brings us closer to a release, and I’m just waiting for a beta. Tarisland Launches as the Most Disappointing WOW Killer

I followed Tarisland since its announcement. I got into the beta and played as much as possible before realizing that this alleged WOW killer failed to deliver on its promises. While I vowed never to pick this game up again, I wanted to give it another chance since it had just gone live. After giving the mobile MMO my fairest attempts, I continue to be disappointed.

Tarisland was meant to be the WOW killer, but this claim typically tends to be a buzzword used to aid in a game’s visibility. Such a bold claim is good for a game’s marketing, and it didn’t hurt that Tarisland’s art style is reminiscent of wows. I was drawn to the game because it was a good-looking MMO I could play on my phone. I understand the stigma behind mobile gaming, but sometimes I can’t or don’t want to be in front of my computer. Sometimes I just want to chill on the couch and play games on my phone.

Tarisland started its journey by promising to be the first free-to-play game that wouldn’t be pay-to-win. This promise was broken after their first beta when they introduced their cash shop featuring pay-to-win items. All mentions of this promise were quickly scrubbed from all their media. These events came as no surprise and should have been a huge flag. I kept playing because I was planning to run this game so casually, the pay-to-win aspect would never affect me. I also didn’t feel like the cash shop was as predatory as other mobile games.

Another issue I have with the game is its customization. While the game looks good, character creation is limited to their premade models. You can change their hairstyle and skin color, but these options are limited. The characters are fine, but people who like to spend hours on character creation will be disappointed by the abysmal amounts of choices. I understand that this is due to the limitations of mobile gaming, but why include character creation if all players are limited to the same pool of choices? Why have character creation when there are gender-locked classes? I feel like those resources could have been spent elsewhere, like making better-looking characters.

The story is rather generic and does little to hook its players. Most players will probably skip through the dialogue in their race to the end game, but the dozens of us who want to be immersed in this new fantasy, Tarisland leave us hanging. The voice acting is either lazy and robotic, or missing altogether. I wasn’t expecting a deep compelling story from a free-to-play mobile game, but I expected the story to at least be interesting enough to be engaging.

I wouldn’t mind the lack of the story if the game was fun, but the game is boring. Tarisland feels like a cheap mobile MMO. Combat is slow, clunky, and uninteresting. It felt like I was waiting for mashing buttons and waiting on cooldowns. What few dungeons I forced myself through were boring, and the whole experience didn’t feel rewarding. Once you get past the graphics and aesthetic, the game is pretty shallow.

I took the game’s limitations going into this game. I wasn’t expecting a genre-defining title from the gate, but I did expect it to be fun. Ultimately when it comes down to it, there are better games on the market that deserve more of your attention. You can try it since it’s free, but it isn’t worth your time.

The Final Shape Made Fall in Love With Destiny 2 Again

I was sent a free copy of Destiny 2’s latest expansion, The Final Shape, to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, this will be my honest review. I know this review is a little late, but I chose the wrong time to have a baby. Between all the diaper changes, feedings, and cuddles, I was somehow able to find time to play through the expansion story. Unfortunately, fatherhood doesn’t allow me for any of the multiplayer content. This review will focus on the single-player content.

I’ve been playing Destiny on and off since its release. Like most, some expansions grabbed my attention and I did all I could to complete the content. Other expansions have sat in my library untouched, or unfinished. I honestly wouldn’t have bothered with the new expansion if it weren’t free. The Final Shape was the first Destiny expansion where I cared about what was happening in the story and sat attentively through the cut scenes. Most cruelly, however, The Final Shape made me care about Destiny when I didn’t have the time to play it.

The Final Shape brings guardians into The Traveler as they prepare for the final confrontation with the witness. It introduces the new Prismatic subclass that allows players for a truly customizable experience. I thought the new subclass was fine, but this will come to preference.

As a casual fan of the series, I have a vague understanding of the lore. There are great recap videos up on YouTube, but I went into the Final Shape completely blind. I did manage to get through the Beyond Light expansion beforehand and thought that was pretty cool. I didn’t have much time to do anything else. You will need to know some of the important figures and plot points to understand what is going on, but you can always watch a summary to prepare and go back to play through the playable expansions later. I don’t think I would have become as invested if I didn’t have any prior exposure to the story.

I like that you can play through the story like an offline single-player game with the options for multiplayer. You can either play through the story mode or choose to play a harder heroic mode if you need the added challenge. I played through the story and thought the challenge was appropriate for my skill level.

The story itself is fantastic. The voice acting is terrific, as it generally is with Destiny. The pacing is solid, and the plot is interesting. This was the first time in a while that I found myself trying hard. Not because I was grinding for a seasonal weapon, but because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. If you’ve been disappointed by Destiny’s storytelling before, The Final Shape might be the expansion that gives you hope for the future of the franchise. If I didn’t have other responsibilities, I could easily see myself no-lifing till completion.

Gameplay-wise, the game still feels like destiny. The enemy design is unique and interesting, but the game still has bullet sponges. The invulnerability mechanic was fun at first, but it does get old and it does slow down some of the fights. That said, there were some interesting boss mechanics that helped keep my attention.

The Final Shape blew me away with its aesthetics. The new armor and weapons are cool, but the world and maps are breathtaking. I love the creativity that went into breaking and rearranging the world to the almost surreal adventure it became. This expansion made me appreciate the fact that I have a computer that can handle the game’s graphics at a high setting. Even if you’ve had your reservations, you won’t be able to deny the fact that Destiny at its current iteration looks good.

I know there were a lot of performance and connection issues at launch. There was an announced maintenance that was a little annoying. I didn’t experience any of that, probably because I was always playing in the weirdest hours, but it is something to consider, especially since you can’t replay any of the cutscenes. I think it is great as is, and if you are looking to get into Destiny, or just want to close the loop, I say you pull the trigger and enjoy one of the game’s best expansions.
