Youtube Movie Reviews: Galaxy Quest (1999)

There isn’t much to say about this movie; this is a good one. Watch it! It is a Star Trek parody that ends up being the “Star Trek” movie we’ve always wanted. It is funny, it is suspenseful, it is exciting, and it has real character growth. I honestly believe that it achieves more than other more serious movies of the genre.

Keep in mind that this is a parody. Don’t expect amazing space battles, well-choreographed fight scenes, or genre-defining special effects. The movie is silly and leans heavily into its cheesy and over-the-top tone. It works well! Trust me.

Underneath all the silliness, however, is a serious message. The movie is about a group of actors that are trapped by the success of a show that is no longer running. They end up having to run through a circuit of conventions, desperately holding on to the feeling of what once was. They all share this sense of being trapped by the shadow of the show’s success, and they all desire to be a part of something greater.

And when the call does come, they answer it reluctantly, stumbling and fumbling along because they are just regular people. That’s what gives this movie its charm. No one knows what they are doing but they slowly fall into their role, growing ass they accept their responsibility. You come to this movie for its silliness, but you stay because you love how it plays out. It tells an engaging story for what it is.

You can watch it free on Youtube, PlutoTv and IMDBtv. It is also included with your prime subscription.

YouTube Movie Reviews – In Time (2011)

When I first watched this movie, it was fine. And it is. It’s a generic action movie that tries to be too deep for its own good. You can ignore the plot holes, the acting, and the improbable science and it’s still not good.

My biggest issue with this film is its preachiness. Every single scene in this movie is about class inequality is bad. Every sentence in this movie is about time. It beats you with the metaphor so constantly that it loses its power. I was so over this movie’s message by the first 20 minutes; it makes this movie hard to watch. They repeat a lot of the same lines. I think this movie has the honorable goal of making some type of social criticism. I don’t it is effective in its execution.

Another issue with this movie is the action is underwhelming. I think Justin Timberlake is the best choice for this movie. I think his acting is good enough for the writing, but he didn’t do much fighting in his time with NSYNC. I would have much preferred if he started singing and dancing. This movie as a musical would be something to behold.

The best part of this movie is easily the time cop that chases them. Cillian Murphy is much too good for this movie, but his character saves it for me. Other than that, I can’t say I cared for it too much.

You can do a lot worse for free. If you are looking for an action movie, the action isn’t very good. If you are looking for a compelling love story, I would call what the main characters have more lust than love. If you want to look at attractive people do stuff, yeah, this is it.

You can watch this with your Amazon Prime subscription. It’s also free over on YouTube. See the link below. Thanks!

The Wave (2019) Review

I will say this movie isn’t for everyone. Its disorienting method of storytelling and subject matter can be off-putting. It is a movie about drug use. That said, the dizzying and disorienting trip this movie takes is worth watching at least once.

This movie plays a lot with how it tells its narrative. The scenes jump around abruptly, making it a bit disorienting to watch. It is confusing and frustrating; that is the point. It is supposed to feel like this deep crazy drug-fueled trip of self-discovery, and it works! If you have ever done hallucinogens or thought about doing them, this is a pretty solid representation.

What makes this movie work so well are the visuals and transitions. It is a very creative and interesting take on the genre. The wacky adventure is still somehow grounded and isn’t trying to be funny “The Hangover” and the clones that stem from it. Instead, it is a more serious trip of self-discovery that might end with a similar message, but the journey is a lot more interesting.

If you are in need of a weird and trippy movie, look no further. Do not be dissuaded by its odd packaging, I believe you should experience this at least once. If you have an Amazon Prime account, it is included in your subscription. If you don’t, it’s free on Vudu.

YouTube Movie Reviews: Jingle All the Way (1996)

It is that time of year! Christmas is in all the shop windows; everyone is busy buying last-minute gifts. It is important to sit back and enjoy small moments of respite with a Christmas movie. There are so many to choose from, but this one happens to be free on YouTube. Holidays are expensive; you can’t go wrong with free!

I consider this film a classic. Now while it may not be in the same vein as “A Wonderful Life” or “A Christmas Story”; it is an important movie in the genre. You have Arnold Schwarzenegger being as charming as he can be. You have Sinbad in his prime. It has deception, conflict, betrayal, and redemption. All markers of a great adventure. While the story borders on fantasy; it is an enjoyable story for the whole family. I will say that there are jokes in this movie that do not age well, but that doesn’t ruin the experience.

If you haven’t seen it, check it out. If you have, it’s free. I will always include this movie in my Christmas movie marathon.

Super Hot (2021) Review

Let me start by stating that this is not a good movie. The plot has too many holes for it to be sound. The acting is over the top and cheesy. The twist and the ending are predictable. That said, I loved this movie. This is one of those bad movies that are fun to watch.

What saves this movie for me are the main characters. The charisma and the chemistry they share are worth watching. I believed they were just a group of goofy friends who stumbled onto something dangerous. This movie should not be taken seriously. It embraces this fact. The silly tone that it embraces fosters the charm that I love.

This film is not for everyone. As I said, it does have a lot of problems. But if you do end up watching it, please don’t take it too seriously. Sit back and enjoy the wacky cartoonish ride.

If you have Amazon Prime, it is included in your membership. I’ve said it before; you can do a lot worse for free.

YouTube Movie Reviews: Spaceballs (1987)

This is a great parody that I believe everyone should experience at least once. It is what parodies should strive to achieve. It is funny, clever, and timeless. If you are a Star Wars fan, this is a must-watch. If you are not, it is not a problem. The movie doesn’t require you to know anything about the Star Wars movie for it to be enjoyable, but it helps.

I will say that this movie can be alienating if you are younger or from outside of the US. This movie makes a lot of references to American pop culture from the time it was released. Some of these don’t age well and others won’t make sense unless you are familiar with American Pop culture. Because of this, I don’t think it is for everyone. I do think it is a movie people should check out, just keep in mind that some aspects of this movie might not make sense. You can do a lot worse for free.

Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021) Review

I might be late to the party for this one, but it is one I need to talk about. If you are looking for a cute kids movie you can enjoy with your kids, look no further. If you don’t have kids, this is a great movie to watch regardless.

This movie gives off “Big Hero 6”, but it has enough of its own charm that I wouldn’t count it as a clone. It is no “Next Gen”. This movie focuses on a friendship that blossoms between a boy, Barney, and his defective B Bot, Ron. It’s fun, it’s cute, it’s smart, and it’s heartwarming. They do make the argument of how social media can be isolating, but it isn’t abrasive or overbearing. I think they handle the topic very well in a format that is entertaining for everyone.

The characters are likable and memorable. The story is enjoyable. I fear that I don’t do this movie justice because I enjoyed it so much. The point is, if you haven’t seen it, watch it. If you have watched it, it comes to Disney+ and HBO Max December 15, 2021.

YouTube Movie Reviews: Fanboys (2009)

If you haven’t seen this movie, I urge you to check it out. If you’ve seen it and love it, it’s free on YouTube.

As far as these road trip because one of our friends is dying movies go, you can’t go wrong with fanboys. It has a certain charm that I find is unmatched. Now I won’t sit here and lie to you, the ending is cliché. What is important here is the journey they go on and not the destination and that’s ok because you enjoy the journey they go on.

The characters are lovable and memorable. The hijinks for the most part are grounded in reality, and those that aren’t are funny enough that it doesn’t matter. It is a well-crafted movie and I urge you to watch it.

I particularly like that the nerd culture isn’t overbearing like in other movies. It feels like a group of friends who are passionate about Star Wars that set off on an adventure. It’s one of the better movies on the platform and you can’t go wrong with free.

Blood Fest (2018) Review

This was an incredibly frustrating movie. Not because it was bad, but because it was lazy. I didn’t expect much from a company that primarily focuses on short videos for the internet and yet I still found myself being let down. I understand that I am not the target audience, but that won’t stop me from criticizing whatever you want to call this. Rooster Teeth makes content for fans of Rooster teeth. This creates clear limitations to the narrative they can tell because the movie will stop multiple times to add poorly placed, pace-stopping fan service. These desperate attempts come in the form of cameos and jokes that add little to the movie. And maybe that is the point but if you are not a fan of Rooster Teeth or are familiar with any of its content creators, it is alienating.

The movie plays like a bad parody. The main characters traverse through this dystopian Disneyland of horror movie tropes without dying. It honestly feels like a series that is connected by terrible dubstep and rooster teeth reference. It might have been better as a web series and it would eliminate all the unnecessary fluff used to pad the movie. Anytime this movie starts to build any tension, it stops to make a dumb joke that never lands.

This movie is very monotone. The meta nature of the movie doesn’t leave any wiggle room for storytelling and instead, you get a lot of bad references to better movies. The over the top acting might be good for a web series, but it overstays its welcome. It is sad because the actors show that they can be charismatic and likable at points, but that charisma is wasted on the terrible writing.

Ultimately, this movie is generic. I knew how the movie was going to end within the first minutes of the movie. I knew where each scene was going to go. My issue isn’t that the movie is bad, I have seen worse, it is that it is boring. You move from parody to parody waiting for the obvious jokes until you get to the obvious twist and it is a huge letdown. There are a few ways this could have been done better but I don’t want to spoil the movie in that regard.

This movie wasn’t made for me. If you aren’t a 13-year-old or a fan of Rooster Teeth fan, this movie is going to be boring. I am disappointed and frustrated that I wasted so much time on an incredibly lazy movie.

Youtube Reviews: Idiocracy (2006)

This movie is a political satire that addresses the dangers of commercialism, complacency, and laziness. It is an interpretation of a possible future if we as a society do not change. The future is a waste land full of idiots who no longer are capable of solving basic problems. There are trash mountains, rampant government corruption, and human life is owned by corporations.  The movie is simple in it’s story telling, but it is a tone that fits the movie.

I recommend this movie based on it’s uniqueness. The acting is over the top. Some of the saturations and shenanigans are ridiculous.  It is an imagining of a future that hasn’t been presented before and I for one am here for it. I will say that this movie can put off some people. It can be gross, obnoxious, and rude but that is the point of the movie. Overall I believe it to provide proper social commentary and I urge everyone, even those who might not like it, to watch it. This is easily one of the better films on the platform.
