The Pokémon My First Battle Kits are a delightful way to teach kids how to play the TCG

I got the Pokémon My First Battle kit because I have a young nephew who collects Pokémon, and I thought it would be fun to teach him how to play. I haven’t had the chance to play with him yet, but since I bought both kits, I decided to try it with my wife. She doesn’t know anything about Pokémon and has never played a TCG.

The first thing you should know before getting this kit is that it is meant to teach young kids. It’s not going to have any value other than getting someone started with the Pokémon TCG. It is a very stripped-down version of the game that focuses on teaching the absolute fundamentals of the game. There are no abilities or supporters, and the rules and phases have been simplified to reduce randomness. I only say this because I already see scalpers selling it for twice what it’s worth.

The set comes with two 17-card-themed mini decks. The cards aren’t standard legal and have the My First Battle logo printed on the back. It comes with two laminated playmats specifically designed for its simplified format. You also get 1 large metallic coin to flip, a sheet of damage counters, six prize cards, and a rulebook to get you started.

The rulebook is clear and easy to follow. I like that it has clear examples with detailed pictures. The playmats feel sturdy and have the actions a player can take per turn printed on them. The setup is incredibly easy. The kit focuses on teaching players the basic phases of the games such as drawing, attacking, evolving, and using item cards. Both players start with a basic Pokémon in the active spot and an energy attached. The rest of the deck is shuffled, and you play the game like normal till one player wins three prize tokens.

Other significant changes include:

  1. Players start with a three-card hand
  2. You can only bench three Pokémon at a time
  3. You don’t lose energy when your active Pokémon is knocked out
  4. You can’t deck out

My only suggestion for people getting this kit is to grab dice to use as damage counters and coin flips. I have never liked counters, and coin flips make things messy. If you are only getting this for your kids to play with, then the counters should suffice. Just note that it will be messy.

If you have kids you want to get into the hobby, this is a great product. If you are trying to teach someone older, there are better options. The kits are at a great price point, and have everything you need to get started. I like that the cards aren’t standard legal, and the mats are sturdy because these cards will most definitely get beat up. My cards came a bit warped, but they weren’t meant to be graded anyway.

I loved this as a tool to teach my wife how to play the game. She has never played a TCG, and only reluctantly agreed to play if the game was easy. With how complicated and luck-based Pokémon can get, I was relieved to have a simplified and streamlined version to get her started. I only needed to explain the rules to her once before she started going through the phases on her own. She had fun and beat me all the times we played. It’ll probably take more convincing to get her to something harder, but I’ll take what I can get.

The kits are $9.99 and come in two flavors: Pikachu v. Bulbasaur or Squirtle v. Charmander. I got them at GameNerdz as a set, but you can pick them up at Best Buy or GameStop while supplies last. I wouldn’t pay more than MSRP for these since you aren’t even getting real cards. With how much Pokémon overprints, I would wait for the restock.

The Pokémon x Van Gogh’ Art Collaboration is so cute!

The Pokémon Company has partnered with the Can Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to produce some of the cutest and most unique products to come to the space. If you are a collector, or just need another excuse to go to the museum, this event is worth looking into. The exhibit will run from September 28 to January 7th, and you can access it for the price of a regular museum admission ticket.

The Exhibit

The collaboration intends to get the new generation into museums which I love to see. The museum will be hosting six pieces by an artist from The Pokémon Company where they fuse Van Goh’s iconic style with familiar Pokémon such as the Self-portrait with Grey Felt Hat (1887).

Snorlax & Munchlax inspired by The Bedroom
Sunflora inspired by Sunflowers

Pokémon Adventure & Pikachu Promo Card

The museum will also be hosting a Pokémon Adventure activity for kids ages six and up. Participants will be given a leaflet to fill out that will guide them through the museum and teach them about the artist in a fun interactive activity. The leaflet will be available in both Dutch and English and completed leaflets can be exchanged for a cute Pikachu promo card you are going to want in your collection. I am hoping the museum has a good way to mitigate the scalpers or greedy collectors. It would be a shame if the target audience for this event weren’t able to participate because there were too many greedy adults. I guess it won’t be a huge deal if it drives up attendance.

The Merch

But if you aren’t able to get your hands on the promo card, you can settle for some of the adorable exclusive merch that will only be available at the Van Gogh Museum’s gift shop. There is an adorable plushy, a cool tote bag, and more while supplies last. Purchases will also come with a copy of the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat if any are available.

Conclusion

If you are in the area, make sure you go anyway. It is always good to support the arts. Even if you’ve seen pictures of the famous paintings at an exhibit, nothing beats being in the same room and being able to examine them up close. It is so cool to see how pop culture seeps into the classical. I love this collaboration because it creates this neat retrospective of art that I hadn’t considered. It shows how eternal some ideas have become, but also how these ideas continue to inspire and evolve. I bet Van Gogh never imagined he would have a whole museum dedicated to him, but here his work is, on a Pokémon card.

SPY×ANYA: Operation Memories announced for the Nintendo Switch

I love the anime Spy x Family. I remember throwing it on randomly because I needed background noise, but I ended up binging it and loving every moment. If you haven’t seen it, you need to because it is one of the cutest things you’ll ever sit through.

The government’s best spy is under assignment to pass as a family man. He needs to find a woman and daughter to help him pass as the perfect family, but what he finds is something much more meaningful. There is action, mayhem, and murder, but where the show truly shines is in the cute slice-of-life family moments that exist in between. I loved watching the characters slowly become a family, and the humorous dramatic irony of the situation makes this series such a delight to watch. Go watch it it on Hulu!

Well, the game, SPYxANYA: Operation Memorieswas just announced, and it looks just as cute as the anime. You play as Anya on her mission to create meaningful memories with her family and friends. This is a slice-of-life adventure game where you can play mini-games, go on outings, and enjoy the world of Spy x Family more intimately. I enjoy slice-of-life for their change of pacing. I will need to see more before I add it to my cart, but for now, I am interested. The game comes out next year.

Pokémon TCG My First Battle coming September 29th

When the Pokémon TCG My First Battle was first announcedI didn’t pay too much attention to it. It was a neat idea, but I didn’t have any use for it at the time. I’ve since been playing a lot more into the game, but I would love some people to play with irl. I could spend the money to build a competitive deck and make time to go to a local league, but it would also be nice to teach people to play in a more casual setting. I have a few cousins and nephews who collect the cards that might be interested, so I did more research about the product and put in a preorder over at GameNerdz.

My First Battle offers a streamlined way of teaching younger players simplified fundamentals of the card game. The hardest part about any TCG is the overwhelming mechanics and rules that go with them. Pokémon is too hard to pick up, but I can see it being overwhelming for newcomers.

My First Battle is designed for younger players. It has simplified rules and mechanics to give players the necessary foundation to get started with the Pokémon TCG. This product is meant to be a solid jumping, but its effectiveness is yet to be seen. Decks have been streamlined to guide players through the different phases, terms, and mechanics.

The kits come with:

  1. 2 17-card mini decks
  2. 2 playmats
  3. A rulebook, a metallic coin
  4. A sheet of damage counters
  5. 6 prize tokens.

I went out and preordered a set of these kits to play with my nephew. I will be comparing its effectiveness as an introductory and see how it compares to the Pokemon TCG Battle Academy kit. Stay tuned for that review.

The kits hit stores on September 29 and will retail at $9.99 MSRP each. GameNerdz has a set of two on sale for $14.97. Free shipping is available after $75, which shouldn’t be a problem to hit. They have a lot of great deals on products you are going to want to fill your shelves with.

Pokémon Trick or Trade Booster Bundle and Halloween Advent Calendar now available!

Since we are a few days into September, it is the perfect time to start preparing for Halloween season. Pokémon has released a couple of products that you are going to look at. If you’ve been enjoying these updates, don’t forget to like, comment, follow, and share this with your friends!

Pokémon Trick or Trade Booster Bundle

This booster bundle is the perfect alternative to candy. Bundles include 50 3-card packs for you to pass out. There isn’t going to be much value in this product, so only purchase it if you are going to give it away. It could also serve as a cheap and inexpensive way to open packs with a younger kid. The BOOster bundles retail at $19.99.

Halloween Advent Calendar

The advent calendar makes the perfect holiday gift for the little trainer in your life. It includes a cute cast of collectable figures, and advent calendars always make for a fun time. The cheapest I found was Amazon for $39.99, but you can also try Walmart for a few bucks more.

Mimikyu at Build-a-Bear

This news is a little old, but I thought I would share it anyways. Mimikyu is at Build-a-Bear and its super cute! If you are a fan of Mimikyu and are looking for a high quality plushy collectable, you might want to check it out. You can only buy the Mimikyu bundle online. The bundle includes the plushy, hat and bow tie set, and the voice box for $52.50. You can pick up Mimikyu in-store for $34.

Mimikyu at Gamestop

In other Mimikyu related news, get your Electric-Tera Mimikyu from participating Gamestops this October. Trainers in the US and Canada can pick up codes for Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet games. No date has been announced for the start date, but I’ll make sure to make an announcement as soon as its available.

Animal Crossing and Mario Kart switch bundles coming in October!

Nintendo just announced a new line of consoles and bundles just in time for the holiday season. If you are looking for gifts or something for yourself, these bundles will be a great place to get you started. If you’ve been enjoying these updates, don’t forget to like, follow, and share this with your friends!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf Aloha Edition

I am going to start with my personal favorite, the Animal Crossing Aloha edition Switch Lite bundles. The design is simple, but I love the colors they are come in. This bundle will have too flavors: Isabelle’s and Timmy & Tommy. Both bundles will include a digital copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which I still have to get around to playing, and the special edition console. I don’t like the colors will be retailer exclusives, but that’s the world we live in now. I just hope the scalpers don’t ruin it for the rest of us. MSRP is set at $199.99.

Nintendo Switch Lite Isabelle’s Aloha Edition

Isabelle’s Aloha edition is my favorite of the two because of the color. The Coral color switch will be a Target exclusive.

Nintendo Switch Lite Timmy & Tommy’s Aloha Edition

The turquoise console will be a Walmart exclusive.

Nintendo Switch – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle

Now the Mario Kart bundle may not come with an exclusive special edition console, but it does come as a regular Nintendo Switch system, a digital copy of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, and a 3 month subscription to Nintnedo Switch Online. Mario Kart has cemented itself as the perfect starter game since its conception, making this a pretty solid gift if you are looking to get your kids started on their first Nintendo. The bundle retails at $299.99, and it isn’t retail exclusive. Preorders available at Best Buy

Nintendo Switch – OLED Model: Mario Red Edition

If you are looking for a special edition, full-sized console, you need to look at the upcoming Mario Red edition. It comes with an OLED version of the switch for a better handheld experience, and a cool red design you are going to want to display prominently. The Mario Red Edition comes out October 6th retailing at $349.99 MSRP. Preorders are available at major retailers

Mech Cadets: a surprising little animated series I ended up enjoying

If you have been enjoying my content and want to support what I do make sure you like, comment, subscribe, and share this with your friends. You can also buy me a coffee

I am honestly surprised by the string of good luck I’ve been having with content I have been streaming on Netflix lately. After a season of terrible original series that nearly broke my spirit, I’ve found a few good animated series that made my Netflix subscription a bit more justifiable. Most of these discoveries were by accident, but I will not complain when I know how terrible the alternative can be.

I started watching Mech Cadet because it was the first thing to pop up when I opened up Netflix. I didn’t have high hopes for the series because it looked cheap and clunky, but was surprised when it turned out to be a solid series about Giant robots that wasn’t Gundam. The series isn’t perfect. Mech Cadets was made for a younger audience. There is a general cheesiness to the writing, and the animation is clunky. But if you can look past the flaws, the series is entertaining.

Stanford Woo is a janitor at Sky Corps Military Academy. The academy trains future Robo pilots. It has always been Stanford’s dream to become a pilot but didn’t get into the program. Only a selected few can join the academy, and even fewer become pilots. Stanford finds himself expelled from the academy, and his dreams crushed. But fate has other plans. When Stanford is at his lowest, a Robo falls from the sky and bonds with him, making him a pilot. But what should be a happy day is marred by danger. Deep in the vacuum of space, an ancient enemy inches closer to an unsuspecting Earth. Will Stanford and this new generation of pilots have what it takes to save the world?

I liked this series, flaws and all. It was a fun little sci-fi series with enough action, solid storylines, and decent character development. It is cheesy, but the cheesiness gives the series its charm. This series has a unique art style that grew on me the longer I watched. I like how everything looks like a painting. The animation is a bit clunky but does enough to tell its story. The voice acting is fantastic, even when the writing isn’t great.

What I liked most about the series is that the stakes felt real. I knew who was going to survive and where the story was going, but it didn’t matter because it felt like there was a chance that I was wrong. There was enough suspense, tension, and build-up to make the story exciting. Mech Cadets may not be the best sci-fi story, but it is entertaining.

If you have kids, throw this on. It is a solid cartoon, and you won’t hate having to sit through it. If you need some decent background noise, you might end up watching more of this than you think. Mech Cadets is a solid option if you have Netflix and are looking for something to watch.

The Wandering Village huge update and release on Game Pass for Xbox and PC

If you have been enjoying my content and want to support what I do make sure you like, comment, subscribe, and share this with your friends. You can also buy me a coffee

I’ve always enjoyed the village builder genre a bit more than I should. I can lose weeks playing a good village builder, and I will always recommend the genre to those looking for a casual and relaxing experience with enough of a challenge to stay engaging. I typically do my best to avoid titles in the genre because of how much time I end up spending on them, but I like to keep my eye out for what’s available just in case.

I’ve been eyeing The Wandering Village for a while now, but I have been strong enough to not pull the trigger. The art is cute, the music score is nice, and the gameplay is what I’d expect from a cute and casual village builder. Now is a great time to get into the game because it is now available on Game Pass for both Xbox and PC, and it is getting its biggest update since its release. Players will now have access to the ocean which introduces a new biome, mechanics, and structures. If you are looking for a cute and casual entry into the village builder genre, it might be worth looking into The Wandering Village.

If you don’t have Game Pass, you can pick it up on Steam for $24.99. It’s currently on sale for. I just got my review code and will post a review as soon as I get back from vacation.

Backpack Hero: The inventory management roguelike you should be playing

If you have been enjoying my content and want to support what I do make sure you like, comment, subscribe, and share this with your friends. You can also buy me a coffee

I was sent Backpack Hero as a review code, and while I am grateful for the opportunity, I will not let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review of the game.

Backpack Hero is a charming little inventory roguelike that deserves a lot more attention. It has a cute art style, a nice soundtrack, and fun gameplay. This game is a lot more fun than an early-access game has the right to be. If you are looking for a chill game that will challenge you, get Backpack Hero.

Dive through procedurally generated dungeons as you fight enemies, find treasure, and manage your inventory. Space in your bag is limited, so choose carefully. How will you brave the unknown? Will you use magic? Poison? Swords? Ninja stars? The choice is yours! (and RNGesus’)

Players start with limited inventory space and gain more as their character levels. Dungeons are full of monsters, treasure, and random events that award players loot to shuffle around. Weapons, items, armor, and potions have unique skills that can interact with each other based on their placement in the backpack. Inventory management is almost like a deck builder as you work towards specific builds by collecting certain items.

As deceptively simple as this game appears, I spent a lot of time theory crafting and optimizing my build only to have my run ended by an enemy or ability I didn’t plan for. Losing was never a frustrating experience in Backpack Hero. I understood my shortcomings and planned for a better run. There are special challenges you can run if the normal game because too easy, but I mostly played in normal because I enjoyed the chill yet challenging vibe that came with it.

What I liked most about this game is how different every run felt. I never had the same build, even when I started building toward a familiar one. There was always something dumb and alluring I wanted to try. It didn’t always work out, but I had a lot of fun exploring and testing my options. The combat is a little simple. It is turn-based, and what you can do is limited by action points. You spend your action points by casting spells, attacking with weapons, or blocking with shields. I never felt like combat got stale because my strategy was constantly changing. Some runs were more fun than others, but such is life with RNGesus.

Inventory management is the most important mechanic in Backpack Hero. If you’ve played any MMO or RPG, you’ve become too familiar with the concept. I used to joke that most of my playtime on Guild Wars 2 was spent in my inventory. In Backpack Hero, you will consistently make difficult choices as you arrange and rearrange your bag. What you choose to keep in your bag affects how you play each round, so make sure you choose carefully. There are vendors and special events that will give you access to random and sometimes cool items, a smith that will upgrade your gear, and cursed items that will mess up your whole strategy. I spent a lot of time theory-crafting the perfect build and had a blast doing it, even if I never got impressively far. There are probably guides out there for the most optimal run, but I recommend you fail a couple of times on your own first.

If you have been considering getting this game or looking for a new game to get into, Backpack Hero is worth every penny. It is a cute casual game with enough kick to it to keep you entertained for hours. You can buy Backpack Hero on Steam for $16.99. Now would be a great time to pick it up because it is 20% off ($13.59) until the 13th.

Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts: The quirkiest post-apocalyptic cartoon you should be watching on Netflix

If you have been enjoying my content and want to support what I do make sure you like, comment, subscribe, and share this with your friends. You can also buy me a coffee

I just finished binging Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts and loved every minute. It is the perfect coming-of-age story, full of adventure, action, and humor. If you are looking for a new cartoon to get into, or simply looking for something to watch with your kids, this is a great solution.

In a dystopian future, society as we know it collapses. Animals have mutated and become sentient and form warring factions that fight over control of what remnants of civilization. The few surviving humans live in underground burrows, hidden from the chaos. Kipo is a burrow girl with big dreams and a bigger heart. She gets separated from her home and ends up in a land full of wonder and danger. Kipo must find her way home, but her journey won’t be easy. Luckily, she finds friends who help her. What will Kipo discover along the way? What will she help others discover?

What I love most about this series are the characters. Kipo is quirky without being annoying, which many shows get wrong. She is a capable teenage girl who will win you over as she does many of her friends. She has her flaws, but the series does a fantastic job of showing her work through them. She is an excellent protagonist and one of the major reasons you should be watching this series.

Kipo’s friends are amazing. The cast is full of fun and memorable characters who also go through an incredible journey. I loved watching the characters grow as they learn from their experiences. I gushed hard at moments that lasted seconds because of how pivotal they were for a character’s development. The attention to detail in this narrative is phenomenal. The series also has some fantastic villains who have great motivations and help mold the story.

This series isn’t perfect, but it’s close. The voice acting is mostly great, but there are a few awkward lines reads. The writing is fantastic, although there is a general cheesiness throughout that is hard to ignore. That said, I believe the flaws give the series its charm.

Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeats is a rollercoaster of emotions that you need to experience once. I was so invested in the story, characters, and moments that I cried a few times. This series has a lot of laughs and some cool action, but when it needs to get serious, you better be ready. The story is fantastic, the art style is fun, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. If you are looking for a cartoon to watch, it needs to be this one.

You can stream Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts on Netflix.
