Unboxing

Features

If you’re looking for an adorable frog themed mechanical keyboad that not only looks good, but is also packed with utility, check out the KiiBOOM Phantom 98 Lite.

Aesthetic

Kiiboom once again proves why it is the best looking brand when it comes to high end feeling affordable mechanical keyboards. The newest color of the Phantom 98Lite, the adorable frog themed green, is sure to make a splash against any backdrop. This addorably themed keyboard features 97 swappable keys. The Moa profile keycaps not only enhance the keyboard’s cuteness, but provide the user with a comfortable typing experience. These dye-sub PBT keycaps have been manufactured to stay looking great, even through your sweatiest team fights. As a nifty little feature, the wireless dongle is securely stored under a cute magnetic frog themed plate that ties the whole look together rather nicely. Now, this wouldn’t be a gaming keyboard without a little RGB. The beautiful south facing rgb, that you can of course switch off if you don’t want to enjoy the light show.

Comfort

The Phantom 98 Lite comes out of the box with the ideal typing angle for most users, but the adjustable kickstands are ready for those like me who prefer a steeper angle. The layered gasket design is designed with enough sound dampening to keep your neighbors from beating down the door during your midnight raids. The keyboard is currently available with the Mossy Silent switches, with Mochi switches planned for late April for those who prefer a little typing ASMR. The switches are soft the reduce typing fatigue, and the Moa keycaps are contoured to make typing feel extra delightful.

Performance

This gaming keyboard promises low latency connections for both its wireless and bluetooth connections. The Phantom 98 lite can switch between 5 different connections quickly and easily. Gamers can enjoy a healthy gaming session with the impressive 8000 mAh battery. When the battery eventually runs out, gamers can enjoy the snappy wired connection with the included braided cable. Best of all, the keyboard offers official support for both Mac and Windows devices, and even includes extra keycaps for those who don’t want the windows keys. Most importantly, the Phantom 98 lite is VIA compatible for additional utility. Users can easily remap, rebind, and program useful macros to improve their workflow.

Sound Test

Review

If you are looking for keyboards that fit a cute cozy aesthetic but are also backed by their quality, then you are looking at KiiBOOM. I have yet to be disappointed by one of their products, and the Phantom 98 lite is no exception. This keyboard is not only the cutest thing to hit my table, but it is one of the most comfortable. If you are looking for something affordable and like the frog aesthetic, get yourself the Phantom 98 lite.

Aesthetic

This keyboard is adorable. I love the cute frog theme and the color. The keyboard has all of the keys I need for my workflow without feeling too big. I don’t really use Mac devices, but I appreciate that I have the option to swap out the windows keys if I’m feeling froggy. Most importantly, the high quality of the keyboard makes it very good option for those trying to upgrade their aesthetic.

Quality

Out of the box, this keyboard feels like it is more expensive than it is. The keyboard comes in fun, clean packaging that makes it feel like a premium product. The gasket does have a little flex to it, but nothing that is noticeable when typing. It is cleanly machined like the keycaps and switches. The keycaps are all printed very cleanly with a clear and legible font. Sometimes, these cutesy themes use fonts that are hard on my dyslexia, but not today. The printed images are all cute, and none of it feels like it will fade or smudge in the near future. Eventually, you will have to replace the keycaps, but luckily everything is easily swappable. At this price point, you aren’t really doing better.

Performance

The keyboard worked great. I did not notice any ghosting or malfunctions in my two weeks of testing. The connections were fast and responsive, and I was able to do my GW2 grind comfortably and without issue. Battery is excellent and I was able to get about 8 hours of continuous use out of the box, and about the same after the first charge. I did add a few shortcuts I needed for work through VIA. The process is easy and it gives the Phantom 98 lite it’s versatility.

Comfort

Comfort is where I have my first issue with the keyboard. It isn’t the most uncomfortable keyboard I’ve used, but I wouldn’t get this keyboard if you need better ergonomics. I have a repetitive stress injury that flares if the ergonomics are not right, and unfortunately, the Phantom 98 lite triggers it. This is a problem that is unique to me and other people with similar hand issues, normal people won’t notice the pain. The keyboard is comfortable enough to get a good amount of work done, but I am left with some soreness. If you aren’t suffering from a similar injury, the keycaps feel really good to the touch, the switches are light, and typing angle is excellent.

Conclusion

The KiiBOOM Phantom 98 Lite is an excellent keyboard for those who want a cute frog themed keyboard that works well and is high quality. My only complaint is that I don’t have access to dial for volume controls, but the keyboard has built in shortcuts to mitigate its absence. If you don’t need special ergonomics and like the design, you are getting a high quality cute keyboard that you will absolutely fall in love with.

You can pick up the KiiBoom Phantom 98 lite on the official KiiBOOM store, or on Amazon through my affiliate link.

Is Super Alloy Crush Worth Playing on Steam Deck?

Disclaimer

I was sent a free copy of Super Alloy Crush to review for my blog. The game is currently on Steam Early Access, so I will try to be a bit more lenient than usual. That said, this will be my honest review.

Shameless Self Promotion

Table of Contents

What is Super Alloy Crush?

Super Alloy Crush is a 2D roguelike side-scrolling beat/shott-em up out now on Steam Early Access. The game has clear OG Megaman vibes with a modern flare and cool anime style art. There is a demo you should definitely check out. Don’t forget to wishlist.

Hook

You are a treasure hunter, flying through the deepest reaches of the galaxy in search for the ultimate treasure. Your journey takes you several planets full of robots after the same thing. Play as Kelly, an enhanced fighter with a powerful gun, or Muu, a combat robot with sharp energy claws, as they fight their way through enemies. Find useful items, buy powerful upgrades, and make your way to the most important place in all of the universe. Will you be the ones to find the fabled treasure?

Gameplay

The game is a clear nod to the old school Megaman games, but I would argue that it is a little easier. Players can choose between the two playable characters, Muu and Kelly, at anytime, giving the game very easy refresh throughout a playthrough. Each character plays differently. Players will make their way through each unique map, fighting off waves of enemies and some light platforming. All stages lead up to a boss fight with unique and memorable mechanics. Between stages, players can buy upgrades and customize their character’s loadout. Throughout a stage, players will pick up upgrades and new abilities. Each character has over a hundred customization options for a truly unique playthrough experience.

Does it work on the Steam Deck?

This game works fantastic on the Steam Deck, and it is my prefered way to play the game. The game works great on my PC, I am running a RTX 3060, but I prefer the handheld experience. I’ve only ever played the Megaman games on handheld devices, and appreciate the nostalgia that playing on the Steam Deck allows me. Super Alloy Crush is a fantastic Steam Deck game because it doesn’t drain the battery, kick up the fan, or require too much memory. As someone who bought the lowest tier Steam Deck, I am very limited on storage space. I will one day upgrade it to fit more, but I don’t have a problem moving things around. That said, Super Alloy Crush has found its permanent home on my Steam Deck.

Review

If you are a fan of the old Megaman games, Super Alloy Crush is a fantastic addition to your library. The game has very cool art and solid mechanics, but the difficulty is a bit on the easier side. I enjoy it for the chill platforming and combat. Most importantly, the game is in a very good place in its Early Access. The game works well, and definitely earns its price tag.

Aesthetic

Super Alloy Crush has some fantastic art. I love the vibrant world, the cool character design, and epic animation. I am a huge fan of pixel art games, and the artists go above and beyond to make a fantastic scifi world that is a pleasure to play through. If you like cute anime girls, fun colorful worlds, and an old school retro vibe to round things out, this is an excellent game to get into.

Story

The story is okay, but nothing that stands out against other games of a similar genre. Honestly, I’ve already forgotten what this game is about because the story feels a little generic. My issue with the story is that the dialogue is so long winded. Everyone drones for too long and I lost interest in the story early on. Luckily, the game is fun enough to overlook this issue.

Difficulty

This game is a fun, casual brawler with enough depth to be engaging and without the elements that made Megaman frustraiting. The game feels a lot easier than old Megaman games I used to struggle through. I loved Megaman, but I was never really good at them. Maybe I am getting better at these types of games with age and practice, but I felt like I didn’t have to struggle as much to get through this game. In my old age, I prefer a game that doesn’t make me struggle and grind because I don’t have the time for it like I used to. That said, the game requires enough thought that it isn’t something you can play passively.

Gameplay

Super Alloy Crush is a solid brawler game. It runs fantastic for a game still in development, and it offers a good amount of content to be worth the price tag. While I preferred playing as Muu (the melee character), I love that I can switch up the characters at any time to refresh my playthrough. Everytime I would start getting board, I would switch and felt like I was playing a different game. The game also offers a good amount of customization for each character, and I was able to play around with builds to find something I truly liked. I still prefer a game like Noctornal over this because it has a better story, but I enjoy it for the low stakes adventure I get to unwind to.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a fun Megaman-like game to round out your collection, Super Alloy Crush is a solid contender. The game has a cool world, solid mechanics, and a casual vibe that makes it perfect for all you busy gamers out there. Don’t expect a good story. While there are hints of good flavor, I started skipping through a lot of dialogue because it adds nothing to the game. If you don’t mind supporting an Early Access game (even one that is in a very goo place in its development), get yourself a copy. At the very least, go check out the demo.

You can pick up Super Alloy Crush on Steam.

What is Island of Hearts?

Island of Hearts is a dating sim FMV out now on Steam. There is a demo available for you to check out. The game deals with some adult themes like alcohol use, sexual innuendos, and girls in revealing clothes. This is your content warning.

Hook

You are at what feels the lowest point in your life. You’ve lost your job and your long time girlfriend has broken up with you. In an effort to cheer you up, your friends teleport you to the Island of Hearts where you will get a renewed chance of love. Suddenly, you find yourself at a beautiful island resort surrounded by beautiful women who are also looking for love. Explore the island, get to know the girls, and try to get all of the endings. Will you find love during your stay, or are you truly destined to be alone?

Gameplay

Island of Hearts is a piece of interactive fiction. You watch scenes play out and occasionally make choices that affects the ending you get. Each choice you make raises the affection level with each girl. There are also a few minigames sprinkled throughout to change up the gameplay, but those are just cookie clicker mechanics. You are playing this game to look at pretty girls doing cute things and to collect all of the endings. The game makes it easy to collect endings by allowing players to redo choices after completing a chapter.

Review

Island of Hearts is fine for what it is. If you are looking for a good FMV, you are better off playing something like Love too Easily or The Fame Game. This game is fun, but the quality is a little too inconsistent. If the goal is to look at pretty girls and enjoy the fan service, fine, but if you’re looking for a good story, you will be disappointed.

Story

There is a story to this game, but it isn’t always good. There are some very poorly acted and produced scenes, and some very boring ones that feel like they drag on for ever. The first part of this game before getting to the island was so boring, I almost gave up on this game. Luckily, it does pick up and not just because of the fan service. There are some legitamately fun scenes where the actors and writers are having fun with the ridiculousness of the game. There are also scenes designed specifically for the fan service which are fine, but there isn’t much plot to it. The endings is where it gets hard to recommend. There are some very fun endings, but there are also some extremely disappointing ones. I collected most of them, but I’ve lost interest in perusing the rest. Once I got the ones I wanted, I saw little interest in going back to try for more.

Quality

The quality of this game is inconstant. Some scenes have good sound, decent acting (for a group of untrained influencers speaking a second language), and are well shot. Others feel out of place because the sound is bad or the acting isn’t great. Most people won’t forgive the bad acting. There are some poorly acted scenes, but there are some very fun moments that saved the experience (and no, not the fan service ones). Are there enough good scenes to make up for the bad ones? Only if you enjoy cheesy bad movies. Also, the transitions are terrible. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it is distracting.

Gameplay

You’re playing this game to look at pretty girls in bikinis and clicking around to get the ending with your favorite girl. There are mini games, but they feel pointless. I failed a couple because the directions aren’t clear and they don’t always work great. Some of the games affect the outcomes, but the impact isn’t very clear. I like that you can go back and change your choices. This makes getting multiple endings fast and easy, but the game does a poor job at letting players know how to achieve certain endings. This is only important if you want to 100 % the whole game, but there really isn’t a reason to. Some of the endings and scenes are just too boring. I do like that collecting endings is easier than Ladies Don’t Tempt my Immortality (a game that really makes you work for all of the unlocks), but I rather be playing that because its a better story.

Conclusion

I enjoyed playing this game more than I thought I would. Although the acting isn’t great and the story is all over the place, there are some fun moments that made the game worth a couple playthroughs. Unfortunately, I don’t think the game is fun enough to recomend. There were enough scenes were I would just zone out and lose interest because nothing happens. I can’t recommend this game, especially when you have games like Love Too Easily. But, if you like the cast of girls and don’t care too much about the plot, there is a good amount of fan service to enjoy. This isn’t a porn game, but there are scenes specifically designed to show off how hot these girls really are. The game isn’t terrible, there are just better examples.

You can pick up Island of Hearts on Steam.

Is Class of Heroes 3 Worth the Grind? Find Out!

What is Class of Heroes 3?

The classic dungeon crawler, Class of Heroes 3 has been remastered for all PC players. The game now supports upgraded graphics, bigger dungeons, and a few quality of life changes to help bring a new generation to the old school RPG.

Hook

Enroll in one of the three district schools as you make friends, delve dungeons, and kill anything that stands in your way. Each school has its unique story, difficulty and most importantly, uniform. With 46 classes to choose from, a large amount of weapons to equip, races to be, and lots of friends to make, you can mix and match for a truly unique gaming experience. When you get tired of school life and dungeon crawling, you can do some alchemy to make the powerful items that will take you through your adventure. What secrets will you uncover? What friends will you take along?

Gameplay

Class of Heroes 3 has 3 gameplay loops: school, dungeon crawling, and alchemy. The game offers a deep, classic RPG experience with a few updates to make the game a bit more palatable for the modern audience, but is it enough?

School

Players will need to attend school where they can have social events, make new friends, rest, and buy or create new items. The schools acts as a home base for players to make crucial improvements before setting off their new adventure. This is where players can recruit new heroes and arrange their parties. Each character has a unique skill set based on their class and race that give players a decent amount of customization. I am sure the game is solvable, but I always appreciate when a game lets me choose what I think is cool.

Dungeon Crawl

Setting off on adventure means crawling through the game’s many dungeons. The crawl is in first person where players explore the world one square at a time. Throughout a crawl, players can find useful items, meet new friends, and fight enemies through randomized encounters. Combat is your classic turn-based rpg where players take turns performing actions. Players choose an action between each round and RNG switches between enemies and player characters to perform them. During a turn, characters can switch formation, perform an attack, cast a spell of ability, use an item, or flee. An encounter ends when the player or monster group’s health drops to zero. It should go without say that killing monsters gives the players the XP they need to level their party. It is important to keep a party well geared and supplied, especially when the difficulty jumps after the introductory stages of the game.

Alchemy

Alchemy is what makes the game unique. While players can loot and buy useful items and weapons from shops in town or at school, upgrading or crafting is more useful in the long run. The game doesn’t do a very good job at describing the importance of this mechanic. Not understanding how to utilize alchemy properly will result in wasting time in a game that is already very grindy.

Review

I have mixed feelings about Class of Heroes 3. On one hand, I love the art, the old school vibes of the game, and the story. On the other, I think I am too old to play a game with this amount of grind. If you miss that era of gaming where you would have to spend hours grinding through a dungeon just to beat that difficult boss, you’ll appreciate this game and the modern treatment it was given. If you don’t have much time to game or remember this era less fondly, you might want to skip this one.

Aesthetics

Class of Heroes 3 is a beautiful game with very cool character designs and a world that is fun to explore. I love the high anime fantasy flavor of this world. This and Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society have very cool flavor, music, and lore, but I wish the games were a little shorter. At least let me auto-battle through some of the more grindy bits.

The Grind

I grew up around this era of RPG, although I missed out on the original release. I have spent more time mindlessly grinding for digital rewards than I would proudly admit, but I used to find comfort in that level of repetition. Now that I am older and have a lot less time to play games, these types of games feel less appealing.

I have noticed the shift in gaming where people want easier games that hold your hand, but this isn’t my complaint. My complaint is that after you get past the early stage of the game, the grind gets so bad, I felt I played for hours without any reward. There is value in games like this for those who enjoy this genre for what it is, but it is a hard sell because not everyone has time for it anymore. The only reason I don’t like this game is because I just don’t have it in me to go through this grind, especially when I have a little one pining for my attention.

Does it Work on the Steam Deck

The game runs great, especially on my Steam Deck. I would argue that the best way to play this game is through the Steam Deck. The words are a little small, but that may be more an issue with age than the Steam Deck port. I have the fondest memories playing these kinds of rpgs on my gameboy, and reliving this through my Steam Deck gave me some comfort, but not enough to recommend. I will say that the grindy nature makes it the perfect travel/couch game because you don’t have to pay too much attention to it.

Gameplay

The game is fine for what it is, but it doesn’t do a very good job at explaining some of the more important mechanics. Combat is pretty strait forward, but I wasted a few turns figuring out the front and back line mechanics. Combat is fine until it gets repetitive.

I still don’t fully understand how to do alchemy, but I figured out enough to get me through my playthrough. I like that there is school events to break up the grind, but there was too much grind to get through. The story is fine, but I took so long with the dungeon delve that it made it hard to keep the events strait. Again, I am old and there may be some skill issue.

Conclusion

Look, if you like the art and need a new dungeon crawler with a retro yet modern vibe, and have the time for the grind, sure. I haven’t played the original game, but it feels like a proper remaster. My only issue with this game is that I just don’t have time for it. For people who don’t have much time to game, the Class of Heroes 3 is too slow of a burn to be worth it. I really wanted to like this game, and even went out of my way to request it, but I just don’t have it in me for a game like this. Honestly, I would rather be playing Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society, a game that is almost as grindy but with more fun mechanics.

For those of you with the time and who like the art, you can pick up Class of Heroes 3: Remaster on Steam.

Revisiting Celestia Chain of Fate

What is Celestia Chain of Fate?

Celestia Chain of Fate is a romance fantasy visual novel out now for Steam and on the Nintendo Switch.

Hook

You have been enrolled into the prestigious school for Daemons, Angelus, and half breeds where you will learn to harness your magic. There are tensions between the races, and you do your best to navigate through the complex webs of relationships that exist in a school like this. In classic Otome fashion, you find yourself at the center of attention. Handsom boys will pine for your affection, rivals will try to make your life at school miserable, but luckily you have a support system to help you through it all. Make the choices that will affect the ending. Who will you choose in the end? The answer is, all of them.

Gameplay

This is interactive fiction without any voice acting. Players will read through the story, and make the occasional choice that will affect the ending. Playing through the game unlocks additional side stories that help flesh out the world, and add a little flavor to the characters you meet along the way.

Review

I’ve played through Celestia Chain of Fate when the game first came out. I loved it, but was very ready for a second play through. I was happy to find that the game still holds up. If you are looking for a solid Otome game and don’t mind the overall cheesy romance, this is a fantastic add to your collection. The story is very cheesy, and it isn’t going to be for everyone.

Aesthetics

The game’s art is fantastic, and it is what drew me to this game. The characters are all very good looking, and the world is drawn very well. There is some very cool art, with some fantastic music to get you in the right mood for romance. The only issue I have with the game is that the backgrounds are kind of ugly. Some scenes are a little distracting because the contrast between art styles is too much. The game does have  has some spectacular CGs that you are going to want to unlock to make up for it.

Gameplay

There isn’t too much to say about the gameplay. You are clicking through the text boxes with the occasional choice to mix things up. There is no voice acting, but it doesn’t need it. I usually read faster than the voice acting anyways. The game does work on the Steam Deck, but I couldn’t get the cloud save to work. I had to start over, which is fine, but the text is a little too small. I am old with tired eyes, so this might be a personal problem.

Story

The story is where I can feel the divide. I have been going through a romance anime kick lately, so I appreciate the story for what it is. Celestia Chain of Fate is a cheesy teen romance visual novel where handsome men pine for your attention. There are some very cringe moments, but there are also some sweet moments that make this the perfect cozy game in my collection. As a hetero male who is very comfortable with his sexuality, I can proudly admit that I like that handsome, supernatural men went out of their way to make me feel like the princess that I totally am. I don’t expect this game to be the piece of literary genius that will stand the test of time,  but its good enough for a couple hours of entertainment.

Conclusion

Celestia Chain of Fate is a fantastic visual novel for those of you who just want to enjoy fun cheesy romance. The writing isn’t deep or even that original, but it is a fun little journey that is worth playing through at least once. I very much enjoyed my revisit, and will definitely be back for a third as I try to collect all the endings. If you don’t mind the cheesy teen romance or the fact that you have to wait for a book too, it is worth getting into You can pick up Celestia Chain of Fate on Steam and on the Nintendo Switch. If you are looking for something a little more serious, check out Nobody Nowhere or my personal favorite, Urban Myth Dissolution Center.

One Rotten Oath: A Unique Narrative Game Review

Disclaimer

I was sent a free copy of One Rotten Oath to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review.

Table of Contents

What is One Rotten Oath?

One Rotten Oath is a unique narrative game that combines FMV visuals with retro shooter gameplay. Check out the Steam demo today.

Hook

Civilization crumbles under the influence of a mysterious chemical leak. People turn into rabid blood thirsty monsters, and survivors do their best to fight them off. You are one of the few survivors who keep watch at one of humanities last outposts. Using you limited resources, you must keep the monsters at bay. Can you survive long enough for help to arrive? Is help ever going to come? You will need to play to find out.

Gameplay

One Rotten Oath is an omage to the the old school FPS in the best possible way. There are two main game loops: limited exploration and base defense. In limited exploration, players move through a small map as they fight off waves of enemies. In base defense, players fight off waves of zombies before they can destroy the barrier. As the player progresses through the story, the game introduces new, harder enemies to fight off. The choices made during a round affects the ending. While the game is short, there are multiple endings a player can try to unlock.

Review

I’ve been reviewing long enough where there are games I play that I’ll forget. Every so often however, there comes a game that tries something weird, and those are the games that tend to stick with me. One Rotten Oath is one of those weird unique gems that comes across my table that helps me appreciate game creation as an art for story telling. This is one of those games I will have to recommend because of how good of an experience it is. This is a game that was made all the way out of the box and tells a captivation story that you need to try at least once. The game does deal with themes of substance abuse and suicide, so this is your content warning.

Aesthetic

Where do I even start? The blend of FMV and old school graphics is a fantastic choice. I love the retro feel of the world. Even though the maps are small, there is enough flavor sprinkled throughout to make it feel larger than it is. I am a huge fan of FMVs, and I appreciate the dev’s unique use of it for story telling and gameplay. The monsters being videos of actors with a filter over is a little silly, but it works. The sounds and music create the perfect horror atmosphere. I really adore the contrast between the FPS bits and the FMV cutscenes. It all comes together to tell an excellent story, and I am 100 percent here for it.

Story

It’s hard to write about the story because I don’t want to spoil anything. The reason the game works so well is because of how well it tells its story. The game is a framed narrative that explores the struggles of game creation and contrasts it against the struggles of surviving the apocalypses. The meta story is well done, and I love how creatively the dev blends the two stories. There are multiple endings, and I’m pretty sure I got the bad one. I am not mad, I will just have to try again.

Gameplay

The game looks simple, and the first level will have you think that it is. As you progress through the story, the game scales nicely. It adds mechanics, new enemies, and choices that affect the ending. This isn’t a game you can sit back and mindlessly click your way through the ending like one of those romance FMVs. The monsters will kill you, and there is a secret ending you need to try for. I appreciate that I am able to relive some of that old school FPS gameplay with a modern story and a modern flare. No notes. 10/10.

Conclusion

One Rotten Oath is one of my favorite games for its unique take on story telling and video game design. This is one of those game you need to try once just to appreciate it as the art form that it truly is. If you have a couple hours to experience a real and relatable story, and don’t mind the horror elements, One Rotten Oath should be in your library.

You can pick up One Rotten Oath on Steam. If you want to try another weird retro FPS, check out El Paso: Nightmare.

What is Minishoot’ Adventures?

Minishoot’ Adventures is a top down, twin stick shooter adventure out now on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and on both Nintendo Switches. Make sure you check out the demo!

Hook

Life was quiet for the shiplings when the Unchosen rose from the darkness and spread its evil. Its forces spread like wild fire, destroying the planets peace and locking up all free shiplings. You are the last remaining free shipling. Travel across a whimsical world, discover powers that have long been locked away, free all of your friends, and fight anything that gets in your way. What secrets will your adventure uncover? Do you have what it takes to reclaim peace to this world? Will you find enough power to beat the Unchosen?

Gameplay

Minishoot’ reminds me of the old Zelda games, but with bullet hell mechanics to make it unique. Players control a lone shipling with twin stick mechanics exploring the world and fighting everything that gets in their way.

Leveling

The game has RPG like leveling that gives players the chance to customize for their playstyle. Players gain XP by killing enemies. Leveling gives players crystals they can spend on useful powerups. In typical RPG fashion, players can customize stats to fit their playstyle. Do you want to hit hard? Do you want shoot fast or be well rounded? The choice is yours. Players will also unlock new powers and abilities along their journey. This game can get as crazy as your typical bullet hell game, but with enough exploration to keep things from becoming too monotonous.

Exploration

Minishoot’ Adventures gives players enough room to have a proper adventure. While it may not be a large sandbox, the game gives players enough choice and agency to explore the world. The game has its core objectives, but there is enough hidden treasures to keep things moving. I personally enjoyed the lack of railroad and how I can approach the content with my own agenda.

Combat

Minishoot’ Adventures is your typical bullet hell twin stick shooter. One stick moves your shipling and the other stick shoots. The enemies all have their unique flavor and attack patterns to keep things fresh and engaging, but there will be a bit of repetition as you grind out your levels. There are unique boss fights, mini boss fights, and a bit of a frenzy to mix things up.

Difficulty

Minishoot’ Adventures lets players choose their gameplay experience with customizable difficultly. Whether you want to sit back for a chill adventure or struggle buss your way through a more hard core style bullet hell, the choice is yours. I am a huge fan of choices.

Review

Minishoot’ Adventures is a fantastic adventure game for those who love the old Zelda Games, but appreciate the bullet hell format. The game has a good looking world, fun mechanics, and most importantly, a lot of heart. Minishoot’ Adventures is easily a staple game that should be in everyone’s library.

Aesthetic

What drew me to Minishoot’ was the whimsical cartoon style art. Once I started exploring the world, I fell in love with the unique world around me. Each zone is full of life and color, each enemy has a cool and creative design, and don’t forget the well designed boss fights with the cool animation. The animations in this game are very cartonish, but it fits the theme and genre. Once you get the crazy bullet hell game going, you get an explosion of color and chaos you’ll find impossible to step away from.

Gameplay

Minishoot’ Adventures is easily one of my favorite games. I love how casual the game can be, while it offers enough of a challenge to keep things engaging. I died enough to know that this game takes enough effort, and a bit of a grind. While this may be a skill issue, it is not a grind I mind being on. Combat in this game is simple, but requires a bit of skill. I played the game on normal, and found the experience perfect for my busy schedule and dad duties. The boss fights are a real treat. They are creative and make the adventure feel epic. I like how each encounter leading up to the boss slowly teaches players the machanics and strategies needed to beat them. There are parts that feel repetitive, especially in the early levels, but it isn’t the worst grind. Most importantly, the game works great on the Steam Deck.

Conclusion

Honestly, I can’t recommend this game enough. The passion and love that was clearly put into this game is visible throughout the adventure. It is a journey for the casual gamer who wants to play a fun game that isn’t a huge commitment, and it has options for those who need the challenge. Minishoot’ Adventures is an excellent adventure everyone needs to go on once, and it has enough replayability for you to even try it twice.

You can pick up Minishoot’ Adventures on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and on both Nintendo Switches. If you need other fun adventure games, Onirism or my personal favorite, Ruffy and the Riverside. Or check out Yosei Wars if you want something uniquely retro.

What is Ariana and the Elder Codex

Ariana and the Elder Codex is a cute Metroidvania coming to Steam on April 29th. In the meantime, go check out the demo and don’t forget to add the game to your wishlist! The game is out now on PlayStation and on the Nintendo Switch.

Hook

The world used to be filled with magic, but tragedy struck when the Seven Hero Codices were damaged and altered. Luckily, a group of librarians work tireless to repair the tomes and bring magic back to this world. While there are many skilled librarians undertaking this task, only one has the potential to save the world. Play as Ariana as she dives deep into the seven tomes, uncovers their secrets, and repairs them. Does she have what it takes to fix all seven tomes?

Gameplay

Play as Ariana as you jump into each unique codex and try to repair them. Each codex is a unique world based on one of the seven elements. Repairing each world allows Ariana to learn new magics. There are over 30 magic spells to learn and customize for a very unique playstyle.

Review

While the game has a few bugs that are a little hard to ignore, Ariana and the Elder Codex is a solid Metroidvania. The game features a creative and fantastical world full of flavor, a cool artstyle, and some solid mechanics. It is on the easier side as far as Metroidvanias go, but as a busy dad, I appreciate that it isn’t an impossible grind. All in all, if you like the art and want another metroidvania to master, check out Ariana and the Elder Codex.

Art

What first drew me to the game is the art style. The game has an undeniable adorable vibe. Each world is creative, brimming with flavor and the monsters are all very cool. I love the look of the animations, although they don’t always seem to work as intended. That might be a day one patch. The music is also fantastic and if you aren’t in love with the look of this game, you might fall in love with the story.

Story

The writing is a little awkward in places, but nothing that made it dreadful. All in all, it is solid fantasy with a proper execution. The idea of going into a world inside a book is not a unique idea, but one that makes a solid adventure game. I like how each of the codices has a unique story it tells, although some of the stories are better than others. They do tend to be the same kind of sad story, but overall I found them to be a good enough read to power through them. There is also some fantastic voice acting to break up some of the reading which I thoroughly appreciate.

Difficulty

As far as Metroidvania games go, Ariana and the Elder Codex is on the easier side. I played the game on Normal and still felt like it could be harder. There is a harder difficulty that you can change at anytime during your playthrough. I might also just be getting better at the genre in general. I don’t think the difficulty is an issue. As someone who no longer has enough time to game, I appreciate when a game is hard enough to keep me engaged but not so hard that it becomes a grind. Sometimes I just want to just get through the story without getting frustraited from the challenge. There is a story mode if you just want to sit back and enjoy the ride, but I think Normal is a solid place to start. You can always adjust it after.

Gameplay

Ariana and the Elder Codex is a fun Metroidvania full of whimsy, humor, and some solid animations. The game does get a little repetative in parts, but I think that is teh nature of the genre. The monsters were cool, the worlds were fun to explore, and it features some managable platforming. This is coming from someone who isn’t good at platforming. The boss fights are so much fun and I am amazed at how creative the devs get with each boss. They are full of flavor and have interesting mechanics. My only issue with the game is with the performance.

Performance

The game is currently in a good place, but it could use a few tweaks to make it perfect. There are a few bugs that were hard to ignore throughout my playthrough because they affect gameplay. Sometimes the game stutters and frames drop. For the most part, these drops are harmless, but I did die twice. There are also fake edges that don’t end where they appear. This issue is a lot more random, but it happened enough that I took notice. None of these bugs are gamebreaking, but they are issues that will make things like speedrunning a little annoying. That said, a couple patches and this game is perfect.

Conclusion

Ariana and the Elder Codex is a cute little metroidvania for a more casual gamer. It has fun mechanics, a cute world aesthetic, and some solid fantasy. It may not be my favorite, but it does enough good to be worth checking out once. If you are looking for a new action platformer to pad out your collection, or something that runs fine on the Steam deck, check out Ariana and the Elder Codex.

Ariana and the Elder Codex comes to Steam on April 29th, 2026, but you can pick it up on PlayStation and on the Nintendo Switch. If you want to play a move unique kind of metroidvania, check out Worldless.Or my personal favorite, Dragon is Dead.

Movierooms Review: Managing Cinema History

Disclaimer

I was sent a free copy of Movierooms – Cinema Management to review for my blog. The game is still in early access and I will do my best to be a bit more lenient. That said, I won’t let this sway my opinions. This will be my honest review.

What is Movierooms – Cinema Management?

Movierooms is a management where you try to save the history of cinema by running your own successful movie theater. The game is currently on Steam Early Access. Make sure you check out the demo, and don’t forget to wishlist!

Hook

Travel through the important era’s of cinema as you build and manage your own successful movie theater in a way that will ship the future. hire your workers, build out the amenaties, and pick the movies that will draw in the biggest crowds. Shaping the history of cinema will not be easy. Things will break, workers can be lazy, and not every movie is going to be a hit. Luckily, you will meet important historical figures to help you along the way. Can you build up to the modern megaplex that will rule the present day of cinema, or will your movie theater crash and burn before the fad starts to take hold?

Gameplay

Players will go through different periods in cinema history and try building a successful movie theater. Players start with a budget that they can use to hire workers, build amenities, run adverts, and rent movies. Occasionally, things around the theater will need to be cleaned and repaired. Players must manage the overall client satisfaction, the theater’s cleanliness, and worker’s happiness. Each epoch will have its unique challenges. Players will also meet important historical figures who will help players out if the player can unlock them. Historical figures are unlocked after completing their quests. Once a epochs quests have been completed, players can move to the next or keep playing the sandbox.

Review

If you are a movie buff and appreciate the history of cinema, you will appreciate how hard this game works to capture it. Each era is carefully crafted to create an accurate feel. The management aspect is okay, but there is some clunckiness that is expected for a game in early access. Overall, if you are looking for a management game to add to your collection, you might want to keep Movierooms – Cinema Management on your radar. At the very least, keep it on your watchlist.

Aesthetic

The game feels like an old school Sims game, but that gives the game its charm. I liked how the technology changes between eras, but everything sort of feels the same. Sure the NPCs are dressed in era appropriate outfits and the decorations change just enough to give the era some flavor, but it doesn’t feel different enough. I am also not very creative when it comes to designing my own bases, so this might be a personal issue.

History

My favorite aspect of the game is how much love they put into capturing the history of cinema. I love the idea of going through each genre and watching how the movie theater changed from the early Nickelodeons to what we have now. I really like meeting different important figures of history and learning a bit about them. What I love most is choosing the different movies you run in your theater. They make some really cool references, and I even got a list of movies I need to rewatch. It is a great game to play if you enjoy classic movies.

Gameplay

The game is a relaxing game, if you enjoy the management genre. The game will start slow, and ramp up but it never feels overwhelming. You can pause the game and set the speed, giving players the ability to adjust the difficulty. The game does get a little repetitive as you have to wait for things to happen, but that is the nature of these types of games. What really makes the game unique is its dedication to the history of cinema.

Now there is some challenge as you try to keep from running your theater to the ground. Choosing the right employees to keep your theater running, the right movies to draw the crowd, and making sure everything runs smoothly can be a challenge. The challenge keeps the game engaging, but the performance doesn’t always do the same.

Performance

The game runs fine for the most part, but the AI needs work. I get that they are trying to make the game feel like a chaotic theater with real people, but sometimes the AI will screw you over. Sometimes your workers will not do what is expected, lowering your score and bricking your run. I had a run where the workers didn’t want to fix my plants and I had to watch them die. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it is frustrating when it does. There is also a mechanic where you have to drag rats out of your theater. That doesn’t always work and it just feels like annoying busy work.

Conclusion

Movierooms is a management game where you get to build, design, and run your own theater. If you are a fan cinema history and don’t mind helping improve an Early Access game, Movierooms is in a good enough space where it is worth supporting. If you are even a little bit indifferent, I would wait till the game is officially out. The game is fine, but there isn’t anything particularly exciting about it unless you enjoy its gimmick.

You can pick up Movierooms – Cinema Management on Steam Early Access.

My Experience at the Pokemon Perfect Order Prerelease

Table of Contents

Intro

Pokemon’s newest set, Perfect Order, releases on March 27. That means you are probably not getting any sealed product unless you have bots ready to scoop up that next Walmart drop. I wouldn’t be too worried however because singles are very available. If you aren’t going after the pumped products, you’re doing just fine. This is how I’ve been rebuilding my collection, and regret nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to crack a pack and be able to go into Target to pick up an ETB at MSRP. I also understand, I am not that lucky and wouldn’t pull the cards I need. Instead of ending up with more bulk than I need, I’ll probably keep buying singles. I will however shell out the money to open packs at a prerelease.

What is Prerelease

Prerelease for the uninitiated is an event that occurs up to two weeks before the official launch of a new Pokemon set that isn’t a special set. The event gives players a chance to play with cards from set, open packs, and even buy product early. These events are very beginner friendly and the best way to wet your feet as a new player. The event runs three rounds of best of one matches where players use decks they build from their Build and Battle box. Prizing varies between stores. The one I went to handed out a pack per round, others might support based on wins.

What is a Build & Battle Box?

Build & Battle Boxes include:

  • 1 of 4 Special Stamped Promo
  • 1 of 4 40-card Themed decks from the current set
  • 4 x Booster packs of the current set

For Perfect Order, the decks are Serperior, Barbacle, Tyrantum, and Douablade. Bulbpedia has the set list for those curious. Tyrantum seems to be the most valuable with four copies of Poke Pad, and Serperior seems the least valuable with none. I would argue since you can open Poke Pads from packs, you’ll be okay with whatever you chose. I don’t think Poke Pad will be that scarce as people start to open more product.

Why I do Prerelease

This is my second ever Prerelease event because the first one I went to was a magical experience I wanted again. I play a lot of Pokemon TCG on PTCG live because I don’t have the time to go play in real life. I’ve actually did build a standard deck I have been so excited to play, but my daughter’s gymnastics class is at the same time, and I rather be there for my daughter. Prerelease however happens around my schedule and I will do my best to make time. Some people will do prerelease to buy product early, others for a chance to crack some packs, but I was there because I wanted to play some Pokemon and make some new friends.

Why you should do prerelease

If you haven’t made it out to locals because you are intimidated misguided expectations, don’t be. Sure there will be a few people who will talk down to you (or not at all), but a majority of the people in the community have been incredibly nice and welcoming. Prerelease is a special beast with a more casual vibe that is better suited for beginners. You don’t even need to know how to play (although it is recommended you at least try to pick up the basics).

Depending on the store and community, someone will sit down and help you build your decks, sort your cards, explain the rules, and even teach you how to play. Because this is a more casual event, players are more understanding and will take the time to teach you the game. Sure there might be a few people that take the game too seriously, but most people are there to have fun and play some Pokemon. Prerelease is a great way to learn the game, get some product, and even make some new friends.

My Perfect Order

I went into this event with the intention of coming out with Serperiour because I love grass pokemon and the promo is so pretty. Everyone around me was so quick to give me their condolences when I pulled my pretty green snake, but I was jumping out of my seat with joy. I even got 2 Poke Pads to sweeten the deal.

All of my opponents were amazing. Friendly and patient as I did my best to keep my ADHD in check. I even won a raffle for a prize pack where I pulled a card I needed for the Sharpedo deck I’ll never get to play. Although I only won 1 of my three matches, I have never had more fun losing. To end an already perfect day, I pulled the IR Clafairy I didn’t know I wanted. I definitely used up all my luck for the rest of the year, but I don’t care because the card is so cute!

Conclusion

If you want to get into Pokemon and have a chance to join a prerelease, head to your LGS and do it. It is one of the best things you can do as a new player, even if you’ve never played the game in your life. If you are reading this after the fact, the next one is in May.
