Is Northwind the Next Great Roguelike Deckbuilder?

What is Northwind?

Northwind is just another roguelike deckbuilder, but it experiments with a few mechanics that might make the game interesting, with a few tweaks. You can pick up Northwind on Steam early access.

You are a mercenary on the hunt for powerful monsters. Craft a deck of powerful attacks and abilities to take down everything that comes your way. With a bit of luck, some skillful deck-building, and the right equipment, there is nothing that can stand in your way. Do you have what it takes to take down the most powerful monsters?

Early Access

Early access gives you access to two mercenaries: The Duelist and Pyrotech. Everyone starts with the duelist and unlocks the Pyrotech by playing through a run. The Duelist is a melee class that hits hard with the right skills. The Pyrotech is good at stacking conditions to win her battles. There are 233 cards, 113 relics, 34 perks, 38 kinds of food, and 23 gems to ensure no two runs are ever the same.

There are three bioms ruled by a total of five bosses across them to keep players busy enough till the next major update. While the game may not be perfect yet, it shows a good amount of promise to at least be a blimp in your radar.

Roadmap

Northwind is not without its ambitions. While the game may promise a good amount of content in its current state, there are a few planned updates to keep fans excited. Planned updates for the next year include:

  • New shop: Monster Gear Engineer
  • 3rd Mercenary
  • Expanded Hazard Levels and Roguelite progression
  • Inspection feature
  • Controller and Steam Deck Support
  • Additional content: Relics, Gems, etc.
  • Visual and QoL upgrades

All we can do as wait for them the publishers to deliver.

Gameplay

Northwind has solid performance, but it does have basic minimal animation.

Players start each game by choosing one of the two mercenaries. I always picked the Pyrotech because I preferred the playstyle, but both seem equally capable of taking on the challenge. Players start with mostly the same deck, save three cards that are randomly generated each turn. Players then choose an encounter, be it combat, combat with a boss/miniboss, random event, or the campsite.

Combat

Combat is a tug-of-war style encounter between the player and the NPC. Each round, the NPC will spawn damage or an ability. A players must use choose the correct combination of cards to either match or beat the number the NPC spawns or take damage. The player looses if their health goes to zero. The player wins if the NPC’s health goes to zero.

To better visualize this, imagine the player encounters a goblin. In the first round, the globlin spawns five damage. The player looks at their hand and plays a number of cards that do five or more damage, provided they have mana.

The mana system is what makes Northwind unique. Mana does not regenerate like in other deck builders like Starvader. Instead, players must draw mana cards and spend or stockpile them strategically. Mana cards are interwoven into a players deck. A player can choose to pick up more along the adventure, but finding the balance between the number of mana cards and attack cards is key for a players success. Players can get mana flooded/screwed if they are not too careful. because of this mechanic, players are sometimes forced into taking the damage in order to stockpile for bigger attacks in a subsequent turn.

Leveling

Mana can be spent to cast attack cards, but they can also be used to level up. Players can level up their character up to level three anytime during each combat, provided they have enough mana. Leveling up a character makes them hit harder. All attacks do more damage when leveling, at the cost of sometimes spending a turn to power-up. This is not only thematic, but it adds a bit of complexity to the combat. Players will need to decide whether or not they want to spend a turn leveling their character or dealing damage. Knowing when to spend and save resources, especially on leveling is key for beating the harder bits of combat.

Relics and Items

Players will occasionally have find randomly generated items or relics to aid them on their journey. These items and relics give players abilities or boosts that give them an edge in combat. Players are either given these items are rewards in random events, paid for through currency or life, or dropped by monsters as treasure. Sometimes, players can choose from a collection of items. However these items find their way into a players, they can easily ruin a run if they aren’t good enough.

Encounters

Aside from the major Boss fights, players can choose not to fight. Throughout a run, players have the option to choose non-combat scenarios. These include but are not limited to shops and random events. A random event can be anything from encountering a stranger that gives a player a boon for a price (or free). The encounter can also be a difficult choice that can also result in a boon. For example, a player can choose to give up some of their health to upgrade one of their attack cards. There are also NPCs that allow players to edit their decks allowing them to buy, upgrade, or delete cards in their decks.

Rest

It wouldn’t be a roguelike deckbuilder without some kind of campfire mechanic. Players are given the occasional opportunity to heal their character. If a player doesn’t need to heal, they also have the option to upgrade cards in their deck and sometimes pick up a special boon to help them in their journey. The placement of these nodes, and knowing when to use them can make or break a run.

Permanant Upgardes

After a run ends, players earn in-game currency that they can spend on buying permanent upgrades. In theory, the game gets easier the more runs a player completes. I am sure there is a solvable way to buy upgrades, but I enjoyed choosing the upgrades that best fit my style. Earning these upgrades are a bit of a grind, but the built-in RNG promises to lessen a bit of that monotony.

Towns

A players will also get a chance to visit a town during a run where they can visit different vendors and buy foods, items, relics and upgrades with currencies they earn across their adventure. These upgrades are randomly generated, and can make or break a run.

Review

Northwind plays with a few interesting mechanics that make it a promising entry to the genre. While it does need a bit of tweaking, the game has enough substance to make it worth at least an add to the wishlist.

The Artstyle

The world of Northwind feels a little bare at the moment. The champions and a few of the monsters have cool design, but I feel like the world lacks flavor. There is not enough color or themes spread accorss the regions that give Northwind a tangible place in genre. People might be drawn in by the cool art for thew promotions, but will forget playing the game because the art isn’t very memorable. It doesn’t help that there isn’t much in terms of animation, but that is probable better for a game like this where the focus is card interactions. Improving visuals is part of the roadmap, so a few more updates may change things.

The Gameplay

Gameplay is where I am completely split on this game. On one hand, Northwind‘s unique mechanics are the breath of fresh air the genre needs, on the other, it has a glaring balancing issue.

Now the game runs great, as I would expect from a game with little animation. I didn’t experience any game breaking bugs, and I got all the frames I needed to play comfortable. The are also enough cards, relics, and items in the current Early Access build for a few fun and interesting decks. The RNG, while mostly fair, can end a run early. This is expected in the roguelike genre, and not enough to ruin the game.

What ruins game is the balancing in later fights. There are fights where you can do everything right, but still get hit with a 100 damage because the game decides its time. I am sure there are foods you can eat, upgrades you can buy, or decisions you can make to mitigate this, but it sucks. Having to spend mana on level feels bad when the boss can kill you with one hit. There are fights where you don’t even get the option to stockpile mana. These fights feel unfair and will turn away the player who isn’t trying to grind at a game that doesn’t have a cool memorable world or animation to distract them.

Final Thoughts?

Northwind needs a bit more time to bake in the oven. The game has a few good ideas that have me excited about its future, but it is kind of hard to recommend when you have games like Takara Cards or even Shogun Showdown. Don’t get me wrong, Northwind isn’t a bad game, it just isn’t ready yet. If you are looking for a new deckbuilder and don’t mind the roughness that comes with an early access game, it is a great way to support a publisher that is making an interesting attempt at the genre.

Wizard Hand Demo Review: A Promising Solitaire Roguelike

What is Wizard Hand?

Wizard Hand is a roguelike solitaire game coming to Steam. Make sure you check out the demo!

Play solitair using a magical deck and try to get the required score and move to the next level. The goal of the game is to clear the table of cards while beating the required score. All players start with a basic deck that they slowly upgrade with other cards and abilities throughout a run. Finding the best combination and knowing when to use your powerful spell cards is key to success in this game. Do you have what it takes to beat the highest challenge?

Impressions

The Wizard Hand demo is incredibly addicting. I wish this were the full version because I want to see what else there is. Right off the bat, I was drawn by the game’s aesthetic. The card art is simple, but with enough elegance and flare to draw the eye. The gameplay is simple, but requires enough of a strategy to keep players engaged. Figuring out the correct sequence and combinations to maximize a score is a mellow puzzle, and I love puzzles. There does need to be more content, but it looks like the devs are hard at work at making things happen. Regardless of that, this a fantastic demo that is effective at showcasing the game’s key features in a way that is fun, engaging, and addicting. Wizard Hand is very promising, but I wish there was more. I can’t wait for a full version.

Nif Nif Review: A Family-Friendly Deckbuilding Adventure

What is Nif Nif?

Nif Nif is the wholesome deckbuidling roguelike you need to buy for your kids.

A mysterious spreads through the forest, contaminating its animals and turning them into monsters. Luckily, Nif Nif knows the cleaning techniques to fight the corruption and save its friends. Build your deck with powerful deck, fight powerful monsters and their bosses, and eat a few tasty snacks along the way. Do you have what it takes to clean up this mess?

Gameplay

The game starts at character selection, which is hard. Players can either play as Nif Nif or Cat. Both characters are unreasonably cute, and the decks play unique with some fun flavor. Players then choose their path to the big boss, building their deck along the way. Like most games of the genre, players choose a node on their path where they can proct combat, a random event, a rest, or shop at the store. Players earn new cards, abilities, and items throughout the run as they build their deck for the final encounter. The card pool for each run is random, so players will never run the same deck twice. A run is over when they run out of health. The run is complete when a player beats the final boss. Players are incentivized to complete multiple runs by chasing unshockable like new cards, abilities, and cosmetics. What makes Nif Nif unique is that the player doesn’t kill enemies. Nif Nif cleans monsters, returning them to their original form and that is both cute and wholesome.

Review

I am so glad Nif Nif was funded when because this game is fantastic, especially if you want to get your kids into deck builders. The art is adorable, the concept is inoffensive, and the gameplay is engaging. It is designed for kids, so the strategy is on the easier side. I like that the difficulty can be adjusted for younger kids, but adults will find the hardest difficulty easy. That sad, I didn’t mind the lack of difficulty. There was still strategy involved, and the cozy vibe made the each run a pleasant and relaxing experience.

I don’t have anything bad to say about this game because it is a solid game, especially if you’re looking for something to play with your kids. I think the difficulty is going to be the deciding factor. If you like something like Slay the Spire, you will appreciate how cute and creative the game gets, but its never going to scratch that need for strategy. That said, the game is engaging enough to earn its attention, and the vibes make it the perfect game for those who want to game, but don’t want a huge commitment.

StarVaders: A Unique Deckbuilder Worth Your Wishlist

What is StarVaders?

StarVaders is a scifi-themed roguelike deckbuilder coming to steam on April 30th. There is a demo available if you don’t want to wait.

Aliens have invaded Earth, and you are the only one that stands in their way. Take up arms in your mech as you fend off against endless waves of alien invaders and their powerful bosses. Travel the world to collect new attacks and abilities to build the most powerful deck. Earn upgrades and abilities that will make you the hero the world needs. Can you save the world, or will you become another pile of burning scrap heap?

Gameplay

Players will choose their mech ad pilot, and fly to the parts of the world that needs them most. Like most games in the genre, players choose between nodes of encounters that help them build up their decks for an epic final battle. What makes StarVaders unique is its movement mechanics.

StarVaders is played is played on a grid. Players must use their decks to maneuver across the grid, and complete the objectives. Players have access to attack and ability cards like other games in the genre, but they also have movement cards. Finding the right balance between the types is key. Having too many attack attack or movement cards means players are wasting a turn doing nothing.

To play a card, players have access to a limited resource system, known as heat. Cards are played by paying its heat cost. What makes this system unique is that players can spend more than their available heat resistance. Doing so ends the turn immediately and burns up the card. Burned up cards go back into the deck, and clog up the hand. This creates such a cool interaction where players need to efficiently burn up cards to maximize damage while also increasing the chances of drawing into a dead hand.

Most importantly, the game features unlockables to work towards, and a couple different pilots to change up the gameplay. If you enjoy deck builders, this StarVaders should be in your Wishlist.

Impressions

If this game out today in its current state, I would still recommend it to everyone. StarVaders is the most fun you’ll have with a deck builder this year. If it isn’t already on your Wishlist, it should be. StarVaders is a day one game, and it deserves all the attention.

The game looks great. It has a fun cartoon aesthetic and cool scifi flavor. The cards and interactions are creative, and a lot of fun. I particularly like how each deck feels unique and changes up the gameplay enough to give it variety. Best of all, it is the perfect steam deck game. The controls are works well, the aspect ration is perfect, and the game is chill enough to be enjoyed anywhere.

If you need a bit more convincing, make sure you check out the demo and get hyped for April 30. Don’t forget to Wishlist!

What is Takara Cards?

Takara Cards is a unique sci-fi deck builder out now on Steam.

The Space Dragons have stolen from the Federation and it is your job to bring them to justice. Pick from four unique classes, maneuver through the most dangerous parts of the universe, and build the strongest deck in the universe. Do you have what it takes to avoid the hazards of space and defeat anyone who gets in your way?

Gameplay

Players start their run with a simple deck that gets upgraded over time. Players will eventually unlock new races, weapons and other perks that make adventuring the far reaches of space easier. Players will drop into a randoms zone after each level where they must avoid hazards and defeat enemies on a 3×3 map. Combat is a turn based system where players have a limited amount of action points they can spend on attacks and abilities. Enemies and hazards act on their own turn. What makes the game unique is that he enemies actions are telegraphed to the player. Players must use this knowledge to maneuver through each level without dying.

Review

Takara Cards is a fantastic deck builder with a fun and you unique gimmick that everyone should have in their collection. I was not ready for how much I loved this game, but here I am, playing it as regularly as my schedule allows me.

Right off the bat, players will be drawn to the simple yet attractive art. I am a huge fan of the cartoonist style, and the amount of effort that went into building the game’s flavor. Couple this with the game’s fantastic soundtrack and you have a scifi game that leaves an impression. The story is fine. I like that choices matter and affect the ending, and the story gave the game a bit of added flavor that I enjoyed.

But the game has its substance. The game play is unique, and extremely addicting. The movement mechanics help set it apart from other games in the genre, and the strategy required keeps the game engaging. I found the challenge level high enough to keep things engaging without ever feeling sweaty.

If you are looking for a new deckbuilder, Takara Cards is a fantastic addition to any library. You can pick it up on Steam for only $14.99.

Star Trek: Star Realms is a fun Deck Builder, not just for Trekkies

What is Star Trek: Star Realms?

Star Trek: Star Realms is the officially licenses reskin of the popular Wise Wizard Games. This is a 2-4 player deck building game where players build a powerful space fleet and reduce their opponents authority to zero. Players take turns buying ships, collecting resources, and attacking their opponents.

Whats in the box?

You get everything you need to play in a very neat and compact package. The game includes:

  • 130 game cards
  • Point counters
  • Playmat
  • Rulebook

How to play Star Realms

The included rulebook does a good job of teaching players the flow of the game, but here is a great tutorial by The Board Meeples for you visual learners.

Review

Star Trek: Star Realms is a high-quality board game with sturdy and well-printed cards. The packaging is fantastic. The box art is cool and iconic. The game pieces are packed neatly inside a cardboard insert with the schematics of the iconic Galaxy class ship. The box can fit all 130-sleeved cards and its contents without having to toss out the insert.

The playmat is nice glossy paper, but it won’t survive as long as the rest of the game. This isn’t a huge deal because it isn’t really needed once players learn the rules. It is a fantastic extra to have when learning the game, but it becomes less valuable the more you play. The damage counters are cool and well-made, but I would rather use an ap.

The card quality is fantastic. The card stock has a good thickness and weight, and the cards feel sturdy. I still advise sleeving since you will be shuffling a lot, but the cards can take a good enough beating before having to buy a new set. Unfortunately, the art is a bit disappointing. Fans of the series might appreciate the style, but the illustrations are too dark. Most of the time, I didn’t know what ship I was looking at. The art in the mainline games is a lot better.

That said, the mechanics and flavor are fantastic. Each faction feels unique, the game is easy to learn, and it is a lot of fun to play. Once I got a few games in, I didn’t mind the art because the flavor of faction made up for it. I am speaking as a casual Star Trek fan, and while I can recognize a few of the names, I can’t tell you how accurate of an adaptation this game is.

If you’re looking to start your journey into Star Realms, the Star Trek version is a fantastic place to start. The rulebook is clear, the game is easy to pick up and teach, and the game is a lot of fun. I do wish the game had solo options like Frontiers did, but nothing is stoping you from playing yourself. Shogun Showdown is an amazing roguelike deckbuilder out now on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC via Steam and Itch.io.

Gameplay

Players start their journey with basic weapons and abilities. As they kill enemies and earn experience, they can purchase more powerful cards. I am sure there is an efficient build for speedrunning, but the game gives players the freedom to build their character to fit their playstyle.

Like most roguelikes, players will earn temporary skills and buffs at certain nodes of their journey. These rewards are random, but they felt fair for the most part. I never felt like I had a weak or useless ability. The levels are the same each, so there is a bit of repetition. The RNG helps break up some of the monthly, and players will eventually unlock new areas to explore. New content just dropped, and there is more planned for future releases.

The combat is the best part of this game. Players can perform one action per turn, and actions alternate between the player and enemies. During a turn, players can move one space, turn their character in the opposite direction, or perform an activity or set of abilities. Players can see the enemy’s actions between turns to plan accordingly. The key to this game is efficiently moving, dodging attacks, and setting up killing blows. A run ends when a player’s health drops to zero, and the goal is to get to the end of the run and beat the one true boss.

Review

I loved every minute of this game. Shogun Showdown is the most creative deckbuilder I’ve ever played. It has great flavor, beautiful art, a fantastic soundtrack, and fun gameplay. If you’re looking for a deckbuilding roguelike that breaks away from the norm, this is the game you need to get.

I love that it always feels like I am doing something. I am a huge fan of deck builders, but they all are starting to feel the same. The flavor may change, but it always feels like I am playing Slay the Spire. It is nice to play a game that changes up the strategy in a unique and fun way that looks good and plays flawlessly.

I recommend this game on any system because this is a game you need to try once. It is the perfect game for those who want something new without having it be a huge commitment, just be prepared to sink a respectable amount of time into it.

Check out the Most Adorable Deck Builder on Kickstarter: Nif Nif

I was sent the Nif Nif demo to cover on my blog. The game is currently on Kickstarter, and it deserves a bit of attention. The campaign ends on September 13, so make sure you check it out before then. I am writing these impressions with the understanding that the game isn’t finished yet and there is room for improvement.

What is Nif Nif?

Nif Nif is an adorable deck builder coming to PC. A demo is available on Steam. Go check it out and don’t forget to Wishlist.

Nif Nif is a happy little piglet who lives near a beautiful forest. He loves to cook and clean and spends his days running around. One day, a strange green goo begins to appear around his beloved forest. The goo corrupts the land and the creatures it makes filthy. Nif Nif grabs for his bucket of cleaning supplies and sets out to clean up the corruption. Will his skills be enough to clear the forest of this infestation, or will the goo prove too powerful?

Gameplay

Players start each run by choosing their protagonist. The demo lets players choose between Nif Nif and a cat, each with its unique theme and adorable mascot. Like any deck-building roguelike, players choose the path of their adventure and work to clear the rooms. The adventure map is randomly generated, but it was a fair spread of events. Each room holds an event. Players can fight against regular or elite monsters, proct a random event for a chance at a power-up, heal their character, or visit the shop. Players also have the chance to upgrade their decks by receiving extra cards, random passive skills, or upgrades for their current decks. These upgrades are randomly generated, but the RNG feels fair. Each run offered me access to different strategies, and each run is meant to feel unique giving the game a good amount of replayability.

What sets Nif Nif apart is its cooking mechanic. Players can cook soups or upgrade existing soups at campfire nodes. These soups give Nif Nif and his friends a special boost and gives players a better chance at survival.

Impressions

Nif Nif is the most adorable deck-builder you’re ever going to play. The game features an adorable protagonist, cute-themed art, and a solid soundtrack. I love the flavor and theme of the cards and decks. I felt like there were a decent amount of strategies, and am sure there are a lot more at launch. I love that I could choose to level a random card instead of having to choose a random card to add to my deck as a reward. nothing is worse than clogging my deck with dead cards and having to pay to remove them later in a run.

It is important to note that this game is meant for kids. Veterans of the genre will find Nif Nif to be on the easier side, but they will appreciate the adorable ambiance and chill vibes. If you have kids, Nif Nif is the perfect way to start them on the deck-building genre. I would argue that it is the perfect game in general. The mechanics are easy to learn but the game offers enough of a challenge to keep things engaging. It is a great way for kids to learn the fundamentals of deck building while they help cute little animals clean up the forest. Most importantly, the game is inoffensive. There is no blood or violence in Nif Nif, just good clean fun.

I loved every minute of Nif Nif. This game is adorable and deserves a lot more attention. There is always a risk when backing a Kickstarter, but the demo suggests the game is in good hands. All it needs is funding. If you want to support an adorable game that your kids will enjoy, go back Nif Nif on Kickstarter.  The campaign ends on September 13 and it will be your own chance to earn some cute exclusives.

Deathless. Tales of Old Rus is Next Deck-Builder Roguelike

I was sent a free copy of Deathless. Tales of Old Rus for free to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinions. This will be my honest review.

What is Deathless: Tales of Old Rus?

Deathless. Tales of Old Rus is a Scandinavian-themed deck-building roguelike that is out now on PC.

Take control of unique characters and use their skills and abilities and explore the dangerous land of Belosvet. Fight against powerful monsters and even defeat Koaschey the Deathless himself. Will the cards be in your favor?

Gameplay

Each run starts players with a basic version of a chosen champion deck. Each deck is flavorful and unique to each champion. As players make their way through the adventure, they can upgrade their decks with new cards and skills. These upgrades are random, making each subsequent run unique. The RNG is pretty fair, and I never ran the same deck twice. A run is over when the health of the champion reaches zero.

What makes Deathless unique is the movement and position mechanic. Players can only attack the frontmost enemy in combat unless the card use stipulates otherwise. Unless the monster uses ranged attacks, they can do the same. Knowing how to manipulate this position and the turns they swap them is an important mechanic to master. For example, some cards force monsters to swap positions, canceling their attacks. Other cards do extra damage depending on their position or if they’re moving. It is a very unique shift in the genre that I enjoyed tremendously.

If you like roguelike deck-builders and need a new one to get into, buy Deathlessl: Tales of Old Rus. The game has beautiful art, fantastic flavor, and solid mechanics. The game is extremely replayable because no two runs will ever be the same. Even if you’re only using one character, the type of deck and strategy you’ll focus on will always be different. If you somehow get tired of what is available, there are new champions in the pipeline. Check out the official development roadmap for assurance.

Deathless. Tales of Old Rus is still in early access, but it feels like a finished game. The animation looks great, the soundtrack is nice, and the mechanics work fine. They are adding new features, which means the game will only get better. I love this game, and will keep it in my rotation. The game is fun, engaging, and it looks like it is actively being supported.

I Wasn’t Impressed by the Northwind Demo

I was asked to cover the Northwind Steam demo on my blog. The game isn’t finished yet, so I’ll try not to review it too harshly. 

Northwind is just another roguelike deck builder coming to PC this year. The demo doesn’t really do much to divert from the traditional gameplay loop. Players start with a basic deck that they improve throughout a run with new cards and abilities. The player restarts the run after losing, and the grind continues. 

The game may feature a fantastic art style and a solid soundtrack, but the gameplay in this demo is lacking. It does very little to inspire any further curiosity. It’s hard to recommend the demo because it doesn’t feel finished, especially when there are better games in the genre you could be playing instead. Unless you like the flavor and style, I would wait for a couple more updates. I might come back for an update because I love the art work, but there wasn’t enough to the demo to have me rushing back.
